Congratulations, Future Residents!
Match Day is a pivotal moment that marks the culmination of years of intense study and preparation. Whether you're feeling excited, anxious, or a mixture of both, know that a whole new adventure awaits. As you transition from student to resident, the demands on your time and knowledge will shift dramatically.
The SOML is here to ensure that transition is as smooth and successful as possible. Here are some essential resources to help you go from medical student to resident.
Essential Library Resources for Residency
Before you even step foot into the hospital as a resident, utilize resources such as UpToDate, UnboundMedicine, BoardVitals, and clinical journals like JAMA and NEJM AI to get a head start on clinical readiness and board review. Available from our Medical Database A-Z list and Medical Journals A-Z List.
Connect with your (Future) Librarian
The library isn't just about books and databases, it's about expert support:
👩🏻🏫Research Consultations
Need to tackle a tricky patient case or start a research project? Schedule a one-on-one consultation with a medical librarian. If you’re continuing your medical career journey at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine, the liaison for Graduate Medical Education is Ana Corral.
Your Residency Transition Checklist
Whether you’re remaining as a UNLV Rebel or going elsewhere for your GME program, below is a helpful checklist to prepare you for your next chapter:
- Verify Remote Access: Ensure your access to library resources will transition smoothly from your student status to your new hospital or affiliated institution's access. If you're staying with the same system, confirm your credentials remain active.
- Download Key Apps: Install mobile versions of UpToDate and your institution's journal apps. Accessing information on the go is crucial.
- Find Your New Librarian: Locate the contact information for the liaison librarian supporting your residency department. Introduce yourself—they are your secret weapon!
- Review Specialty Textbooks: Start skimming the core textbooks specific to your residency program (e.g., if you matched into Pediatrics, start with Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics).
Congratulations again on this incredible milestone! We look forward to supporting your success throughout your residency and beyond. Go forth and match with confidence! -SOML
