Technology Use Policy

PURPOSE: The purpose of this policy is to outline the responsible and ethical use and management of technology resources and equipment provided by the UNLV Libraries. This includes, but is not limited to the use and borrowing of computers, any technological equipment, Dreamscape Learn spaces, the libraries’ makerspaces and multimedia studios, as well as accessing electronic resources provided by the libraries.

This list is not exhaustive, but provides users an overview of appropriate technology use:

General responsibilities for using Libraries’ technologies and equipment

  • Eligibility: Technological spaces and equipment are available to current UNLV students, faculty, staff and authorized community users, who will be referred to as ‘users’ within this document. Valid UNLV identification must be available for borrowing technology equipment, using library computers, Dreamscape Learn and/or using the libraries' makerspace or multimedia spaces.
  • Authorized Use: Libraries’ technology is intended for academic and educational purposes. Commercial or illegal use is strictly prohibited. Users cannot create any weapons, parts of weapons, or weapon-like items.
  • Account Use: Sharing accounts is prohibited. Any accounts allowing access to UNLV computers are for use only by the users to whom they are issued.
  • Respect for Others: Use library technology in a manner that does not disrupt other patrons.
  • Free Speech, Academic Freedom and Title IX: Use of the computer facilities must respect free speech and academic freedom principles while adhering to Title IX regulations. Offensive material for academic purposes is protected, but users should be considerate of others. Report any offensive behavior to library staff and/or other appropriate university offices.
  • Care and Maintenance: Handle all equipment with care. Report any equipment issues or damages immediately to library staff. Do not attempt to repair equipment yourself. Leave spaces and equipment clean and organized for the next user.
  • Liability and Damages: Users are financially responsible for any loss, theft, or damage to library technology while in their possession. The library reserves the right to charge for repairs or replacement costs as necessary and/or suspension of technology access privileges and other disciplinary actions if a violation of policy or procedure is found.
  • Data and Privacy: Save personal files to your own storage devices or cloud storage. The Library is not responsible for files left on library computers or devices or files lost/corrupted due to unexpected circumstances beyond the Library’s control, such as power failures.
  • Prohibited Activities: Do not engage in illegal activities or activities which violate the university’s student code of conduct while using library technology.
  • Intellectual Property: All projects created within University Libraries technology spaces and/or with University Libraries equipment must respect the intellectual property of others and follow all copyright laws.
  • Reporting Violations: Any misuse of technology resources should be reported to library staff. Violations may result in disciplinary actions, including suspension of privileges and referral to university authorities.
  • Privacy: The privacy of library users is and must be inviolable. The library reserves the right to review usage to ensure compliance with policies and protect library resources.
