UNLV Music Library’s 2020 Holiday Highlight Series: The Nutcracker Suite Arr. By Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn

Everyone is familiar with classic The Nutcracker from Tchaikovsky. You may not know what the music is from, but you hear it and hum along. The ballet was originally composed in 1892, but didn't become an immediate success. Long after The Nutcracker Suite was put together, from extracted movements of the original, the entire ballet became the Christmas traditional we know today.

In 1960, as the ballet was becoming popular, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn recorded their own interpretation of the music. This recording feature a jazz twist and included a small band of piano, trumpet, trombones, saxophones, double bass, and drumset.
