The Social Media Student Assistant will help increase awareness of the distinctive collections, materials, services, and activities of UNLV Special Collections & Archives. Working with Libraries Communications and Special Collections & Archives staff, the student assistant will research, develop, and publish engaging social media content that makes archival materials accessible and relevant to students, faculty, researchers, alumni, and the broader Las Vegas community.
This temporary project-based position provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in archival research, digital storytelling, content planning, copywriting, social media publishing, and basic performance analysis.
Purpose of the position

Working with Libraries Communications and Special Collections & Archives staff, the student assistant will research, develop, and publish engaging social media content that makes archival materials accessible and relevant to students, faculty, researchers, alumni, and the broader Las Vegas community.

Duties & responsibilities
- Research materials and stories in UNLV Special Collections & Archives for potential social media content
- Develop engaging and accurate posts that introduce archival materials to public audiences
- Write and edit social media copy consistent with UNLV Libraries’ voice, brand, and editorial standards
- Create basic photographs, videos, graphics, and other visual content to accompany social media posts
- Assist with maintaining a social media content calendar and scheduling approved content
- Work with Libraries Communications and Special Collections & Archives staff to identify collections, events, exhibits, and services to highlight
- Ensure content follows applicable accessibility, copyright, privacy, and archival-handling guidelines
- Monitor basic engagement data and assist with tracking the performance of published content
- Develop reusable content templates and document workflows to support future Special Collections & Archives outreach
- Assist with other communications and outreach projects as assigned
Working conditions
Work will be performed primarily at a computer and within Special Collections & Archives and other University Libraries spaces. The position may require extended periods of sitting, occasional standing or walking, physically lifting and moving materials weighing up to 50lbs and the careful handling of archival materials under staff supervision.
Qualifications
Required:
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills
- Familiarity with major social media platforms and the ways content is adapted for different audiences
- Ability to conduct research and translate complex or historical information into clear, engaging content
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and ask questions when clarification is needed
- Ability to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and work independently
- Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Ability to collaborate with staff and respond constructively to feedback
- Reliability and consistent punctuality including regular attendance
- Willingness to learn appropriate procedures for working with archival materials
- Interest in Las Vegas, Southern Nevada, UNLV, or public history
- Coursework or experience in communications, journalism, public history, history, marketing, digital media, or a related field
- Ability to lift materials weighing up to 50lbs.
Preferred:
- Experience creating content for an organization, publication, student group, or professional social media account
- Experience with basic photography, video editing, or graphic design
- Familiarity with content-creation tools such as Adobe Creative Cloud or Canva
- Experience reviewing social media analytics or engagement data
