This temporary student assistant position is scheduled between 10 and 15 hours per week. Scheduled shifts are dependent on the student assistant’s availability and the operational priorities and needs of the division and/or department. This position supports students in the use of multimedia and maker technologies

Purpose of the position

Research, Innovation, and Creation Student Assistants support the University Libraries Multimedia Studio and Makerspace. These dynamic and innovative spaces focus on fostering UNLV community-driven learning experiences through specialized technology and expert assistance. The purpose of this position is to provide operational and instructional support for equipment and software including 3D printing, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, sewing, podcasting, music recording, video recording, post-production, and other electronics. 

Duties & responsibilities
  • Assist users with maker tools and equipment
  • Assist users with design drawings and other concept development
  • Assist users with sound and video production and post-production
  • Assist with Makerspace and Multimedia orientations 
  • Create and maintain learning guides and support materials 
  • Monitor and maintain making supplies and tools
  • Follow and enforce safety guidelines 
  • Develop and maintain consistent policies and workflows for services
  • Perform light equipment maintenance and cleaning, such as sweeping and dusting  
  • Record statistics and update user records with appropriate information
  • Master the fundamental operations of hardware, software, and other tools used across these spaces
  • Actively continue to learn and increase knowledge of relevant tools and technologies
  • Perform other duties and complete special projects as assigned

Qualifications

Required:

  • Contribute professionally and respectfully to a diverse and inclusive work environment
  • Interest in design, engineering, making, crafting, or creating audiovisual content
  • Willingness to learn technologies and develop skills to support Multimedia and Makerspace services
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow directions
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision

Preferred:

  • Customer service experience 
  • Previous library, makerspace, digital fabrication, or audio/video production experience
