Patricia Iannuzzi, dean of the UNLV University Libraries

It is hard to believe the summer is over and we have already reached the beginning of another academic year. While I wonder where the time has gone, I am more excited than ever about all that is in store for the UNLV University Libraries and our community. As UNLV continues to pursue Top Tier status, so many new opportunities lie ahead, including a major resource for the community: a health sciences library.

One of the hallmarks of an education at a Top Tier research university is the opportunity for undergraduates to engage in the rigor of research. According to the Council on Undergraduate Research, the benefits of scholarly activity at this level include increased student retention, the creation of an information-literate workforce, and the development of a culture of innovation — all of which are central to UNLV’s mission and vision.

The UNLV University Libraries has added a new way for library supporters to honor their loved ones: by naming a study booth. And these booths are special! Images from the University Libraries’ Special Collections are laminated into tabletops, each one highlighting a different facet of Southern Nevada culture and history. Themes such as Howard Hughes, historic Las Vegas, showgirls, menus, and entertainment capture the imagination and offer the opportunity to honor family and friends in unique ways.

Business by the Book: Helping Small Businesses Succeed

business by the book

Who can a small business on a tight budget turn to for help with marketing, research, problem solving, and more? If that small business is in Las Vegas, the answer is simple: UNLV University Libraries’ Business by the Book workshop series.

Just take it from Lora Hendrickson, marketing consultant for Radioactive Productions, a small creative media services business in town. She attends as many sessions of the Libraries’ Business by the Book workshops as she can and has even been a guest speaker, paying forward all she has gained from the program and UNLV’s “progressive” library faculty.

Patricia Iannuzzi

This past October, at an event held at the UNLV University Libraries, Mayor Carolyn Goodman said something important. When discussing how the Las Vegas community grew to be what it is today, she said, “Everybody worked hard and worked in their own way, and everybody played a part in the building of this community.”

Her statement was an important reminder of how essential it is to embrace everyone, engage everyone, and educate everyone. As the only research library in Southern Nevada, the University Libraries are committed to lifelong learning for all members of our UNLV and greater Southern Nevada community.
