Summary: This four reel collection contains newspaper and journal articles, excerpts of testimony presented before the Subcommittee of Senate Foreign Relations Committee, investigations, reports, pamphlets, and transcripts from radio broadcasts. McCarthy made headlines in Feb. 1950 when he announced that the federal government was rife with Communists and spies. Even though he could not furnish a list of names, it still launched the country into a Red Scare (Communist Hysteria). To investigate his charges, McCarthy was given a Senate Committee. There were allegations that the FBI, in particular, J. Edgar Hoover (FBI Director) was supplying information to McCarthy. McCarthy and the committee used smears, slanders, rumors, and innuendoes to destroy hundreds of people’ careers and lives. Finally the Senate in Dec. 1954 decided to censor McCarthy which left his reputation and political career in shambles. He died two years later.
