Summary: The SNCC was organized in 1960 as a nonviolent civil rights movement devoted to direct-action, voter-registration campaigns for blacks in the Deep South. In 1965, the SNCC shifted emphasis from civil and voting rights to the empowerment both economic and political, that those rights bring. In 1966 with the election of Stokley Carmichael as the National chairman and the subsequent nation chairman H. Rap Brown, the group pushed aggressively for the black political and economic enfranchisement, as well as advocating black supremacy. Carmichael popularized the slogan Black Power. This 2 reel collection contains field reports of the SNCC from regional offices Atlanta, Jackson, Baltimore, Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, New York, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Springfield, and Washington. The reports cover the years from 1964 to 1973, with the heaviest concentration of reporting during the years 1967-69.
