Summary: This 14 reel collection chronicles the detailed history of the United States Government research project that produced the first atomic bombs. The name Manhattan Project was assigned as much of the early research was performed at Columbia University in Manhattan. Prior to 1943, most of the work was theoretical, based on fundamental experiments spanning the country. Later in a special laboratory in Santa Fe, New Mexico the actual construction of a deliverable weapon that dropped from a plane and fused to detonate at the proper moment in the air above the target was developed. The first atomic bomb exploded at 5:30 am on July 16, 1945 at a site on the Alamogordo air base (120 miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico). The following month, two other atomic bombs produced by the project were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Included in this collection are press releases, maps, photographs, and reports of the investigation of the after effects of the bombings in Japan.
