The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) invites applications for the following temporary, part-time, hourly position located in the University Libraries.
Role of the position
Housed within the Scholarly Communication and Data Services (SCADS) department, this position will contribute to several strategic, operational, and educational initiatives related to research data management, data discovery and curation, and data literacy across the UNLV research community. These may include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting SCADS in developing and maintaining an inventory of UNLV-affiliated datasets, as well as scholarly publications that include data availability statements. This work will involve identifying and documenting datasets housed in both generalist and discipline-specific repositories.
- In collaboration with the Data Librarian, conducting an environmental scan of existing research data catalogs and repository platforms. This analysis will include documenting differences in platform functionality, metadata standards, search and discovery features, and approaches to subject classification, taxonomy development, and record tagging. Findings from this work will help inform future decisions related to data discovery infrastructure and metadata best practices within SCADS.
- Under the guidance of the Data Librarian, supporting outreach and engagement efforts with UNLV researchers, faculty, and laboratory teams. This may include scheduling and/or participating in meetings and consultations to better understand current research data workflows, data management practices, storage and sharing needs, and challenges related to data organization, preservation, and reuse.
- Under the guidance of the SCADS team, maintaining data services resources, including LibGuides, instructional materials, and other educational content. The fellow will also have the opportunity to contribute to the development and delivery of data education workshops, gaining insight into the library's instructional role in supporting research and promoting data literacy across the university.
- Other projects on the topic(s) of data literacy, research data management, and data curation to support data services within the UNLV Libraries as appropriate.
The Fellow will also receive both one-on-one and group mentorship from members of the SCADS team, providing valuable professional development and insight into academic data services. The Fellow will be encouraged to collaborate on scholarly projects that directly relate to the work of the position. This position is ideal for someone interested in entering the field of data librarianship.
This is a temporary, part-time, hourly position. The anticipated schedule is 16 hours per week.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
- Competence and sensitivity in working with individuals who are highly diverse regarding many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, ability, income, level of educational attainment, and religion.
- Interest in or experience with data literacy, data curation, research data management (RDM), or other related data services.
- Interest in the field of data librarianship.
- Strong attention to detail and consistency, even while performing repetitive work.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and ask clarifying questions.
- Ability to learn complex systems and workflows.
- Comfortable working independently and in a team environment.
- Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to problem-solve and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with or interest in instruction, tutorial development, and/or instructional design.
- Experience with or interest in coding languages (such as python or R) and/or software packages used to work with research data.

Salary and position details
This is a temporary, part-time, hourly funded position for 16 hours per week at $22 - $25 per hour depending on experience, for a total of up to 43 weeks. Hours will be scheduled between 8am and 5pm, Monday-Friday. The successful candidate is expected to work a total of up to 688 hours between September 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027. This position is eligible for a flexible work schedule. Remote candidates will be considered.
This position is not eligible for time off benefits and is not eligible for health benefits. Position is required to participate in the FICA Alternative Retirement Contributions.
