Summary:
This 106 reel collection consists of bound volumes and unbound documents that are chiefly instructions to and dispatches from diplomatic and consular officials. The dispatches are often accompanied by enclosures such as diplomatic notes exchanged, pamphlets, pictures, and newspaper clippings. The records also include notes between the Department of State and foreign diplomatic representatives in the U.S., memoranda prepared by officials of the Department, and correspondence with officials of other government departments and with private firms and individuals. Reels 1 to 3 contain summaries of lists of documents or "puport sheets" that give brief abstracts of the documents and serve as a finding aid to the documents themselves. Approximately 51 reels are entirely devoted to political affairs. Other subjects include: government and social affairs; economic, industrial, and agricultural matters; and communication and transportation. Some text is in the Spanish Language.
