This journal is an important source of Russian documents. A large percentage of the items deal with the 20th century Russian Revolutionary movement, but one can find entries on the Tartars in the 14th century, Bering's expeditions, and Russian diplomacy during the Taiping Rebellion. Although the primary emphasis is on European diplomacy, it is also a good source of information on Russian-American relations. Some of the major figures represented in the documents are: Pushkin, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Turgenev, Balzac, Goethe, Rasputin, Nicholas II, and Protopopov. In Russian with some French.

McCarthy made headlines in Feb. 1950 when he announced that the federal government was rife with Communists and spies. There were allegations that the FBI, in particular, J. Edgar Hoover (FBI Director) was supplying information to McCarthy. McCarthy and the committee used smears, slanders, rumors, and innuendoes to destroy hundreds of people’ careers and lives. Finally the Senate in Dec. 1954 decided to censor McCarthy which left his reputation and political career in shambles. He died two years later.
