Makerspace, Multimedia Production Studios Open in Lied Library

Forget laptops and scientific calculators.

Starting this fall, UNLV students and faculty in any discipline will now have unprecedented access to 3D-printers, laser cutters, and podcasting and video recording studios as part of the Lied Library’s new Makerspace and Multimedia Production Studios. The new creative space is located on the library’s first floor.

“These new spaces further the University Libraries’ support of the learning and research activities of UNLV students and faculty,” said Maggie Farrell, Dean of the UNLV University Libraries. “These transformational spaces will help drive UNLV’s mission to be a Top Tier university and provide new opportunities for exploration, collaboration, and innovation in Las Vegas.”

The University Libraries invested nearly $1.8 million in the creation of these student-focused spaces. The renovation converted nearly 3,500 square-feet of space that previously housed library faculty offices, storage, a staff conference room, and the Media Desk, which closed in summer 2016.

“We are proud to offer these incredible tools and resources in a space that helps our students and faculty unleash their potential,” said Chris Heavey, interim executive vice president and provost.

The Makerspace is designed to facilitate active learning, prototyping, tinkering, and community-driven or self-directed projects. Upon completion of a mandatory orientation session, users will have access to 3D printing, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, sewing, and prototyping materials.

The Makerspace will be staffed by UNLV students, and open Monday - Thursday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Friday from noon to 5:00 pm.

The new spaces also include four audio production studios and a video production studio. The audio production studios can be used to record podcasts, interviews, and music performances, while the video production studio provides an all-in-one space for recording performances, presentations, interviews, and much more.

These studios are designed to support learners and researchers at every level of experience.
