This temporary student assistant position is scheduled between 10 and 15 hours per week.  Scheduled shifts are dependent on student assistant’s availability and the operational priorities and needs of the division and/or department

Purpose of the position

The Student Assistant at the Architecture Studies Library provides prompt, courteous customer services while performing front-line circulation, reserves, and basic reference services to library users and effective stacks maintenance for the collection.

Duties & responsibilities

Circulation Desk:

  • Check out, check in, and renew circulating library materials, including equipment and Reserves, on the automated system at the Circulation Desk
  • Issue library cards/update borrower records
  • Assist patrons with requesting holds and other interlibrary loan or document delivery requests
  • Communicate library and circulation policies
  • Sort books, CDs and DVDs for shelving and shelve materials as needed
  • Maintain hold and reserve shelves, including shelf reading reserve stacks for accuracy
  • Answer basic informational, directional questions by phone and in-person
  • Answer basic reference questions
  • Refer questions to an Architecture Studies Library staff member or librarian when appropriate
  • Assist patrons with basic troubleshooting on Architecture Studies Library computers and printers
  • Help patrons locate materials in the stacks
  • Record usage statistics
  • Assist patrons with basic troubleshooting on Music Library computers and printers

Stacks Maintenance:

  • Shelve, retrieve, and shift library materials
  • Conduct in-house use counts for unshelved materials
  • Inventory/shelf-read assigned section of library to ensure correct shelving order
  • Search the collections for library materials that may be missing, "claims returned", etc.
  • Straighten the shelves of books, update aisle markers as needed, replace bookends.
  • Report maintenance or security problems (lights out, broken furniture, spills etc.) to supervisor or Safety personnel
  • Record usage statistics
  • Help patrons locate materials in the stacks
  • Work on shifting projects as assigned

Other:

  • Assist with stack management special projects
  • Participate on inventory projects in the stacks
  • Assist with course reserve processing
  • Restock office supplies for desk staff and patrons
  • Assist in opening and closing the library if working during either shift
  • Attend unit, departmental and library meetings as required
  • Attend training sessions as required
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Working conditions

Sitting at a computer screen, physically lifting and moving materials weighing up to 50 lbs., maneuvering book trucks weighing up to 100 lbs., bending and stretching, and exposure to dust. Capable of reading labels for shelving and shelf reading.

Qualifications

Required:
* Customer service skills and high energy level 
* Ability to lift up to 40lbs
* Ability to push and pull fully loaded book trucks weighing up to 100lbs
* Strong attention to detail and ability to follow directions
* Performs independently and able to remain flexible when changes are needed
* Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills

Preferred:
* Experience working in a library environment preferred
