Archival Inventory Assistant

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) invites applications for a temporary, part-time, hourly position located in the University Libraries.

Role of the position

This is a temporary, part-time, hourly position. The anticipated schedule is 10 hours per week for 27 weeks.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Special Collections and Archives seeks applicants for one temporary, part-time, hourly archival assistant to inventory a variety of historic periodicals relating to Southern Nevada. This opportunity is funded by the Dean’s Leadership Circle and based on a one-time need for a special inventory project.

Special Collections and Archives has over 500 unique periodicals that are currently unavailable to researchers due to lack of description. These periodicals detail the history and evolution of the Las Vegas Valley and surrounding areas, including community and civil rights organizations, businesses, and neighborhoods; general Nevada history; and local, regional, and international gaming. This position will create detailed inventory lists of these periodicals to add to our online catalog.

The responsibilities of this position include following established procedures and workflows to create inventory lists of historic periodicals held in Special Collections and Archives.

This project is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in archival work to gain hands-on experience working with rare and unique materials in a professional setting. The Special Collections and Archives Technical Services department will provide structured training under the guidance of a professional archivist.

Significant collecting areas are: gaming and gambling; regional community groups and organizations; sexual entertainment and economies; Las Vegas entertainment and the arts; Las Vegas and urban resort architecture; mining and railroads; and Southern and Central Nevada history. The division is comprised of three departments: Technical Services, Public Services, and Digital Collections. It also includes the Libraries’ preservation unit and conservation lab and the Oral History Research Center.

Salary and position details

This is a temporary, part-time, hourly funded position for 10 hours per week at $15 per hour, for a total of 27 weeks. Hours will be scheduled between 9am and 5pm, Monday-Friday.  The successful candidate is expected to work a total of 270 hours between August 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026.

This position is not eligible for time off benefits and is not eligible for health benefits. Position is required to participate in the FICA Alternative Retirement Contributions.
