Hansel and Gretel is a German fairy tale written in the early 1800s. Since its release, different librettos have been written to turn the classic story into an opera. Engelbert Humperdinck, a popular composer from the late 1800s, wrote the original libretto, which gave birth to the fairytale opera. The plot involves a poor mother who sends her son and daughter into the woods in search for berries, ignorant to the dangers that lurk in the forest. Watch a modern twist on the classic German opera.

Conducted by Douglas Boyd, France’s Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, accentus, presents one of Handel’s most beloved oratorio’s. This concert was performed and filmed in the Philharmonie de Paris in 2015 and is sure to delight. Everyone is familiar with classic The Nutcracker from Tchaikovsky. You may not know what the music is from, but you hear it and hum along. The ballet was originally composed in 1892, but didn't become an immediate success. Long after The Nutcracker Suite was put together, from extracted movements of the original, the entire ballet became the Christmas traditional we know today.
In 1960, as the ballet was becoming popular, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn recorded their own interpretation of the music. This recording feature a jazz twist and included a small band of piano, trumpet, trombones, saxophones, double bass, and drumset.
What’s the holiday season without the Vince Guaraldi Trio’s, A Charlie Brown Christmas? Vince Guaraldi, a jazz pianist, was enlisted to whip up some music for the Christmas special. The music and show debuted in December of 1965. Rolling Stone’s writer, Liz Pelly describes the songs in the 40 minute soundtrack as “both smooth and snappy,” while also leading the audience along through the show and adding more depth into the character’s adventures or actions.

Cherevichki is a classic Russian Opera composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in the late 1800s. The story is based on the book "Christmas Eve" by Nikolai Gogol, written fifty years prior. It also contains revised components of Tchaikovsky's previously written operas. The plot takes place in the winter scenery on the night before Christmas in a Ukrainian village. This mature and emotional opera was originally preferment in Moscow, however, it has since been performed all over the world and connects with people from all cultures. Conducted by Pilippe Herreweghe and performed by The Collegium Vocale Gent, this performance of four Christmas cantatas, written before Bach’s Christmas Oratorio in 1734, is sure to put you in the holiday spirit this season. This period-instrument concert showcase’s the earlier years of Bach's time in Halle and Leipzig and was filmed in December of 2015 at Paris’s Église Saint-Roch! Whether it be in a movie or a performing arts hall, nearly everyone has heard the iconic music from The Nutcracker. Based on E. T. A. Hoffmann's story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King", this two part ballet was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Interestingly enough, The Nutcracker was not hugely popular until the 1960's!
