The Makerspace is a multidisciplinary space dedicated to exploration supported by both emerging technology and traditional equipment. The Makerspace will continue to grow and evolve as relevant new technologies are identified.

Access

Current UNLV students, faculty and staff who have completed the Makerspace Orientation are welcome to use the Makerspace during open hours:

Orientation

Completing the Makerspace Orientation is required. The orientation is an introduction to the space, equipment, and the safety procedures of the Makerspace. In order to successfully complete the orientation and be eligible to use the Makerspace, a user agreement must be signed at the time of the orientation.

Request a Consultation

Users of this interactive space can connect with staff skilled in 3D modeling and printing, laser cutting and etching, vinyl cutting, sewing, and other tools. Staff are available to help as needed or you can book a consultation in advance via the Lied Technology Consultations page.

Laser Appointment

You may not use the laser cutter unsupervised. To use the laser cutter, you must make an appointment with a Makerspace employee who will assist you with your project.

3D Printing & 3D Scanning

Service Details

  • 3D Printers are available on a first come, first served basis.
  • Project design and support from staff
    • Consultation request. Time on equipment is subject to availability during designing/planning consultations.
  • Policy
    • Only approved materials sold by the Makerspace may be used with the 3D printers.
    • Do not leave the 3D Printer unattended while it is printing unless arranged with staff in writing.
    • Overnight printing is not permitted.
    • Maximum Print time is 12 hours.
    • The library cannot guarantee item quality or stability, nor confidentiality of designs. Any finishing steps (e.g. removing rafts/supports, sanding, removing paper backing, etc.) is the responsibility of the user.

Laser Cutting & Etching

Service Details

  • The laser cutter is staff mediated and requires an appointment.
  • Project design and support from staff
    • Consultation request. Time on equipment is subject to availability during designing/planning consultations.
  • Policy
    • Only approved materials sold by the Makerspace may be used with the laser cutter.
    • You may not use the laser cutter unsupervised. To use the laser cutter, you must make an appointment with a Makerspace employee who will assist you with your project.
    • Never leave a laser cutting project unattended. You must be present for the entirety of your project.
    • The library cannot guarantee item quality or stability, nor confidentiality of designs. Any finishing steps (e.g. sanding, assembly, painting, etc.) is the responsibility of the user.

Vinyl Cutting & Stickermaking

Service Details

  • The vinyl cutter is available on a first come, first served basis.

    • Only approved materials sold by the Makerspace may be used with the vinyl cutter.
    • Always keep all body parts and objects away from machine while cutting is occurring.
    • Vinyl cutter jobs may not be left unattended unless arrangements are made with staff in writing.
    • The library cannot guarantee item quality or stability, nor confidentiality of designs. Any finishing steps (e.g. weeding, application, etc.) is the responsibility of the user.

Sewing & Embroidery

Service Details

  • The sewing machine is available on a first come, first served basis.
  • Project design and support from staff
    • Consultation request. Time on equipment is subject to availability during designing/planning consultations.
  • Policy
    • Only Makerspace approved material may be used with the sewing machine.
    • Turn off the machine when setting up your sewing project.
    • Never place hand under the “foot” of the machine or the needle.
    • Sewing projects may not be left unattended unless arrangements are made with staff in writing.
    • The library cannot guarantee item quality or stability, nor confidentiality of designs. Any finishing steps are the responsibility of the user.

Prototyping

Service Details

  • Table space for prototyping is available on a first come, first served basis.
  • Project design and support from staff
    • Consultation request. Time on equipment is subject to availability during designing/planning consultations.
  • Policy
    • A variety of hand tools are available for use in the Makerspace. Users may bring their own hand tools into the Makerspace, but employees may choose not to allow certain tools on a case-by-case basis. Users must present tools to Makerspace staff upon arrival.
    • Users are prohibited from using tools for unintended purposes.
    • Return Makerspace tools to their original location and notify staff if a tool is broken or missing.
    • Power tools other than those provided by the Makerspace are prohibited.
    • Spray painting is not permitted in the Makerspace.
    • Prototypes may not be left unattended unless arrangements are made with staff in writing.
    • The library cannot guarantee item quality or stability, nor confidentiality of designs. Any finishing steps are the responsibility of the user.
