With selections from soundtracks like A Nightmare on Elm Street, to songs like, "I Put a Spell on You," this list contains all of our favorites for you to play throughout this October.

In this post, we spotlight world-renowned performer, composer, and educator, Keiko Abe. Born in Tokyo, Japan, Abe was first introduced to the marimba in the early 1950’s and instantly fell in love. In her younger years, she recorded, performed, and even had her own T.V. show teaching marimba to children. Keiko Abe is an absolute legend amongst the percussion community. Her work with the Yamaha Corporation led to the development of the 5-octave marimba in the 1980’s, which is now the standard size for the concert marimba. Her compositions make up a significant amount of the standard marimba repertoire for both solo and ensembles works and, in 1993 she became the first woman to be inducted into the Percussive Arts Society’s Hall of Fame.

Start out your day with Grammy Award winning bassist, composer, and singer Esperanza Spalding! Esperanza is heralded as one of the greatest jazz bassists of all time. In 2011, she made history after being the first Jazz musician to win a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Making it an even bigger feat she was up against popular artists like Drake, Mumford & Sons, Florence + the Machine, and Justin Bieber. Her many other awards include: four Grammy Awards in various categories, a Soul Train Music Award, and a Boston Music Award. She also made history as one of the all time best jazz bassists, a highly male dominant field.
Along with performing, Esperanza is currently learning about music therapy and how we can use music for healing. She is also working with Wayne Shorter on a new opera Iphigenia.

Today’s spotlight is on famous singer and actress, Judy Garland! Born Frances Ethel Gumm in Grand Rapids, Minnesota on June 10, 1922, Garland began an early singing career at just the age of 2 with her sisters. Her most notable acting performance was in The Wizard of Oz (1939) as she played Dorothy Gale. You might also know her from A Star is Born (1954) and Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). Garland received an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy in her lifetime. She has received other awards even after her passing in 1969. As well as her acting career, Garland’s unique singing voice can be found on her 9 studio albums!

To kick off Women’s History Month, we are focusing on Lady Day herself, Billie Holiday! Holiday was born on April 7, 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She took on the name “Billie Holiday” around the 1920s, and around the same time became a prominent figure in the New York jazz scene. At the age of 18 years old, Holiday cut her first record with Benny Goodman. Holiday was also the first Black woman to work with a white orchestra in 1938.
At age 44, Holiday passed away unfortunately. Her musical legacy lives on through hit songs like, “I’ll Be Seeing You,” “I Wished On The Moon,” and “Moonlight in Vermont.” Holiday has been inducted in the National Women’s Hall of Fame, along with many other achievements!
