part 1: Arriving in Las Vegas in 1987 as Chairman and CEO of First Interstate Bank, Don Snyder immediately became part of the community through the United Way board and the UNLV Foundation. This interview covers his South Dakota and Wyoming childhood and schooling and follows his banking career through California, Asia, Latin America, and Nevada until his 1991 resignation in Las Vegas. Subjects: Las Vegas, NV; Banking; United California Bank; First Interstate Bank; strategic planning; career planning. Part 2: In this second session Snyder discusses banking regulators, a potential 1991 banking crisis in Nevada, and his resignation from First Interstate Bank; tells of teaming with Bill Boyd and Todd Marshall to open Bank West of Nevada (now Bank of Nevada) in 1994 and of bringing in Robert Sarver to expand its growth. Talks of adapting the Smart Cities approach to statewide connectivity via the "Nevada Smart" initiative. Subjects: First Interstate Bancorporation; First Interstate Bank of Nevada; Bank West of Nevada; Bank of Nevada; Western Alliance Bancorporation; Switch; Boyd Gaming; part 3: In this third session, Snyder recalls his consulting work with the Downtown Progress Association and joining the Fremont Street Experience for 50 percent of his time, developing a strategic plan, and hiring Kenny Wynn as the owners' representative, Jerde Partnership as the architect, and Marnell Companies as the contractor. Mentions joining boards of Harveys Casinos and Household Bank. Describes how FSE changed popular attitudes about Downtown Las Vegas and spurred other redevelopment investments. Discusses call-to-action event hosted by Elaine and Steve Wynn and John Goolsby to establish a performing arts foundation; when Wynns and Goolsby left in 1999, Snyder assumed chair and in 2000 brought in Myron Martin. Also talks about joining Boyd Gaming board in 1966, becoming president 1997, developing and acting upon strategic plan, and retiring in 2005. Subjects: Downtown Progress Association; Fremont Street Experience; Jerde Partnership; John Goolsby; Myron Martin; Boyd Gaming; part 4: Relates the adventures of Steve Wynn, Barry Shier, and Don Snyder in a fast boat at Lake Tahoe. Tells how the historic Wilbur Clark Desert Inn Bridge came to find a new home at the Tom Fazio golf course at The Summit Golf Club. Focuses on career at UNLV beginning in 1988 as an active member board of trustees for the UNLV Foundation, five years as board Chairman and another eight years as chair of UNLV's first comprehensive capital campaign, which met its goal in the midst of the Great Recession and established a philanthropic mindset at UNLV. He discusses serving as dean of the UNLV Harrah Hotel College from July 2010 through June 2013, during which time he led the faculty to create a strategic plan and closed the UNLV Singapore campus in order to maximize the advantage of the Hotel College's setting in the "world's largest hotel and conference laboratory." In 2013 he was appointed by President Neil Smatresk as the university’s executive dean for strategic initiatives, in which capacity he would lead the university conversations regarding a football stadium. Subjects: Steve Wynn; The Summit; University of Nevada, Las Vegas; UNLV; philanthropy; fundraising; UNLV Harrah Hotel College; strategic planning; stadium; football stadium; part 5: Bo Bernhard, Executive Director, International Gaming Institute at the William F. Harrah College of Hospitality, joined this session to focus on UNLV's role in building a professional football stadium in metropolitan Las Vegas, in overcoming National Football League objections to Las Vegas as an NFL city, and in bringing the Raiders NFL team to Las Vegas. Snyder explains the Nevada legislation that created the Campus Improvement Authority Board and the process by which the Board opted to build a domed professional stadium that seats 65,000-70,000 over two other possible models. Snyder also reflects on his time as UNLV Acting President, during which he consulted aspirational peer universities and hired Barbara Atkinson, M.D., as the founding dean of the UNLV School of Medicine. He also modified his usual strategic planning process in order to lead the university toward achieving by 2025 the vision previously adopted under past university president Neil Smatresk's goal to move UNLV toward Tier 1 status. Talks briefly about his work with Clark County School District over the years and the District's new Don and Dee Snyder Elementary School, which opened January 2018. Subjects: UNLV; UNLV International Gaming Institute; Global Intellectual Capital; sports betting science; Las Vegas Raiders; Oakland Raiders; National Football League; Campus Improvement Authority Board; peer universities; stadiums; strategic planning; Tier 1 status; UNLV School of Medicine; Clark County School District |

Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project |
At five years of age, Terry Cavaretta and her sister Kandi (age 8) began flying lessons; learning the art of the trapeze. Soon all six children could fly. Their work took them and their parents to London, Paris, Copenhagen, and throughout most of the United States. In 1968, at 15 years of age, the family moved to Las Vegas to open the Circus Circus. At first, they lived in the Westward Ho, then an apartment, and finally in a home. They were happy to be in one place and have remained here for 50 years, interchanging the act with siblings as some got married, divorced, reared families, and formed diverse acts. In the beginning, performing above the craps table was distracting but they loved their art, hone unbelievable skills, and fascinated crowds. They did travel for a few engagements such as the invitation from the Queen of England in 1977. In 1992 when most of the family had retired, Terry and her brother Jimmy became an adagio act in the Folies at the Tropicana. In 1982, Rejean moved to Las Vegas as an juggler. From the age of four, growing up in Montreal, Canada, he learned acrobatics and juggling. He had traveled as a circus performer most of his childhood having learned the trade from his father. Rejean and Terry married in 1983. He entertained in the Lido, the Folies, and Jubliee. Once they retired, they operated a school for trapeze artists. As well as an entertainer, Rejean is an artist painting in the "Art du Flage" style (his term). His artwork depicts random blends and patches of color resembling a camouflage pattern but when one steps back, the work transforms into the refined image of the character he had chosen to depict. Terry and Rejean's 16 year old son is a natural artist who may play soccer though instead of juggling and flying. Subjects: St. Petersburg, Florida, London, Paris, Copenhagen, Queen of England, Westward Ho, Circus Circus, Folies Bergere, Jubliee, Lido de Paris, Joe Castro, Jay Sarno |
