Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project |
Justice Miriam Shearing is the first female member of the Nevada Supreme Court. She and her husband moved to Las Vegas in 1968 because of the warm welcome they received from her husband's fellow ophthalmologists and from Governor Grant Sawyer. But the field of law wasn't ready for females so she was turned away from firms because it was felt that she should be at home with her children. Although after a few years in a solo practice, she ran successfully for a Justice Court Judgeship, supported by older women who knew that the time had come to diversify the bench. |
