Tafoya, Daniel OH-03540 2018 December 12 Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project Daniel "Dan" Tafoya was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1968. Tafoya describes his neighborhood as tough and poor. Tafoya describes his story as intertwined with his father's, a man who served federal time in a prison in Washington state. When Tafoya's father left prison he turned his life around, leaving behind his old life, dedicating himself to an honest living and his oil paintings. As a result, Tafoya's father kept his children on the straight and narrow. Tafoya struggled in school due to his learning disabilities, however this did not stop him from joining the Air Force and having a very successful career. He spent 13 years in the military stationed at Nellis Airforce base. After leaving the military Tafoya began working in higher education, moving to work within CCSD and the Latin Chamber of Commerce. Born and raised in Lahaina, Maui, Hawai'i, Wayne Tanaka speaks to his dual identity as a Japanese Hawaiian and of his mixed generational identity. His father, an ordained Buddhist minister, was Issei, a first-generation Japanese Hawaiian, but his mother, a teacher, was the second generation of her family in Hawai'i. He speaks of his father's World War II internment; of coming to Las Vegas with the Boulder Dam Area Council of the Boy Scouts during high school; of going to the University of Utah; of his wife, Sadie, his daughters, and his career as an educator in Clark County School District.
