F849.B6 S43 2009 Genevieve "Gene" Segerblom contributed in a multitude of ways to her home of more than fifty years--Boulder City, Nevada. She is a third-generation Nevadan and was born in Ruby Valley, Nevada, in 1918. Gene and her future husband Clifford moved from Reno where they both had attended the University of Nevada, Reno to Boulder City in 1940. After they came back from Panama in 1948 where Clifford had a photographing assignment, she ran a day care center and did freelance writing of articles about the Nevada landscape with her husband providing the photographs. Gene taught high school in Boulder City. She was elected city councilwoman in Boulder City in 1979. Gene served four terms in the State Assembly from 1993 to 2000. Her grandfather was a state senator and her mother was an assemblywoman. Today her son Richard "Tick" Segerblom serves in the State Assembly, so they are the only family to have had four generations serve in the Nevada legislature. She was involved in the creation and restoration of the Boulder City Hotel and Museum and was involved in the American Association of University Women, the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce, and the Community Club. Gene did charity work for other groups. too. The theater in the Boulder Dam Museum was named the Segerblom Theatre in her honor. She passed away on January 4, 2013, at the age of 94. |

F849.L35 S53 2017 Graduate of University of Arizona's first Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning (1967) to Las Vegas January 1979 as Clark County Planning Director until 1984; then Clark County Manager until 1996; President Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, 2001; president Nevada Power Company 2002; currently Chairman of Board of Directors of the Las Vegas Monorail. Discusses benefits of regional planning and team approach to quality of service and efficiency in county government relative to growth, transportation, water, flood control, air quality, tourism, policing, etc. Follow-up discussion regarding attraction of position in 1979: Clark County had a new outlook and philosophy about planning and offered Shalmy free reign to create a planning department from scratch. Other than water, sanitation, hospital, and the airport, which were already consolidated, Clark County offered a clean slate relative to planning. Shalmy and his department presented the first comprehensive master plan to the Clark County Commission in about 1982. |

African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project |
Marlena Shaw chose an unusual path to stardom. She married and gave birth to five children before she launched her singing career. Surrounded by jazz from a young age, especially from her uncle Jimmy Burgess, she performed with all the greats of the day - Sammy Davis, Benny Carter, Billy Eskstine, Count Basie, Lou Rawls, and many others. She sang on stages beginning at the Playboy Clubs and went on to venues in Germany, Japan, Los Angeles, England, Australia, and Las Vegas. In New York she performed at the famed Apollo as well as Carnegie Hall. Shaw made her home in Las Vegas in a house described by a seer years before her late 1960s purchase. Her numerous albums include the first one in 1967, "Out of Different Bags" to the most current in 2014, "The Swingin' Life." Sixteen others fill the intervening years. These albums were produced by seven different record companies - Cadet, Blue Note, Columbia, South Bay, Verve, Concord Jazz, and Soul Brother Records. Marlena chose Japan as the place to announce her 2014 retirement. They had supported her music more than any other country including the USA. Subjects: Horace Silver, Blue Note, Mt. Vernon, NY, Cadet Records, Count Basie, Sammy Davis, Billy Eskstine, Sands, "Woman of the Ghetto," "For All We Know", "Out of Different Bags," "All of Me," "Go Away Little Boy." |
