Acherman, Ruben, Dr. OH-03671 2019 July 18 Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project F850.S75 A24 2019 Dr. Acherman has been practicing in Southern Nevada for nearly 20 years and continues to care for the community at the Children’s Heart Center of Nevada in Las Vegas. Born and raised in the small town of Palmira, Colombia with his two sisters and parents. His father is from Romania and immigrated to Ecuador while escaping from Nazi occupied Europe during World War II. Dr. Acherman eventually moved to Cali, Colombia in order to attend medical school. knowing that he wanted to specialize in cardiology and being unable to do cardiology in Colombia he immigrated to the U.S. and specialized in pediatrics at USC. After practicing for two years in Toronto, he was contacted by Dr. Evans in 2001 with an offer to work at his practice in Southern Nevada where he was able to successfully perform the first balloon dilation in the state of Nevada. Agonia, Barbara OH-02669 2007 September 17, 2007 September 25, 2007 October 02 Las Vegas Women Oral History Project F849.L35 A46 2008 Barbara Agonia was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1934. She graduated from Hanover College in southern Indiana in 1957 with a double major in English and speech/theater. Barbara taught English, speech, and theater in Illinois. In 1969, Barbara moved to Las Vegas where her sister lived and enrolled in a master's degree program in English at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. As she was completing her degree in 1971, she was hired by the Clark County Community College, which is now the College of Southern Nevada. Barbara did public speaking on behalf of the college, taught composition and literature, and eventually became chair of the English department. She became actively involved in rape crisis education and helped establish a Women's Center on the community college campus in 1980. Barbara also became involved in the Soroptimist International organization for business and professional women. She also became involved in the Friends of the Nevada Wilderness. As a representative for Soroptimist International, she traveled to Washington, DC, to lobby and testify in front of the Senate for the establishment of Great Basin National Park. yes 0

Aguilar conducted by Monserrath Hernández on April 19, 2019 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. In this interview, Aguilar discusses his early life in Tucson, Arizona. He recalls his educational experience, attending the University of Arizona, and his initial interests in law. Aguilar talks about lobbying the Arizona legislature for a second student regent on the Board of Regents, attending law school, and serving on the Catholic Charities Board, Opportunity 180 Board, and the Nevada Athletic Commission. He describes being nominated for the Bosch Fellowship, and being a founding chairman of the Cristo Rey St. Viator College Preparatory High School in North Las Vegas, Nevada. Later, Aguilar talks about the importance of prioritizing education in local communities, and his vision for Cristo Rey. Lastly, he shares his thoughts about the Latinx community in Las Vegas. yes 0
