Schlegel, Robert OH-01638 03/09/1998 Gay Archives-Dennis McBride Oral history interviews with Rob Schlegel conducted by Dennis McBride on various dates in March and April of 1998 for the Las Vegas Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Archives Oral History Project. In the interviews, Schlegel recalls his early life in Port Angeles, Washington, his conservative Baptist upbringing, and his early experiences with literature. Schlegel then discusses working with newspaper publications in high school and college, understanding his sexuality during college, his first gay sexual experience, and his first trip to Las Vegas, Nevada. He recalls working with Robert Lloyd "Bob" Brown at the Valley Times during this visit. Schlegel talks about moving to Las Vegas and working full-time as the production manager for the Valley Times. Schlegel explains becoming active in politics through his newspaper work, meeting notable casino executives, and financial and political controversies the Valley Times experienced in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He then describes coming out as gay, and working at the Nevada Gay Times beginning in 1985. Schlegel also talks about opening and managing the Bright Pink Literature bookstore in 1987 and starting a separate publication Night Beat in 1992. He then recalls cofounding Las Vegas Gay Pride and Southern Nevada Association of Pride, Inc., conflicts he had within the Las Vegas gay community, and working at the Gipsy nightclub as a secretary. Schmidt, Elwood L. OH-03515 2018 October 11; 2018 November 14 Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project Elwood was well read as a young boy and that allowed an independent streak early on. As a teenager he learned to make floating candles to finance trips to Texas to work on his uncle's ranch. His work with the horse at that ranch led him to medical school; the line to register for classes in veterinary science were longer. His work ethic and spirit to succeed led him to jobs as far away from his Texas undergraduate and medical schools as Fairbanks, Alaska. Done with school, he worked for the US Public Health Service. Elwood became a country doctor. He worked with Hopi and Navajo Indians and then to Babbitt, Nevada, Yuma, Arizona, Jai, New Mexico, Lovelock, NV, and other small towns to care for a rural population. He is a self-described country doctor. His respect for the work of the Emergency Medical System led him to interview ambulance workers across the state of Nevada, write, and publish a book about them after hiring a professional photographer to travel with him as he recorded their stories. The results are captured in a beautifully bound book. HIs next book may be The Black Bag. Subjects: Hopi, Navajo, US Public Health Service, Black Bag, EMS, Texas A&M no 0

Schneider, Stephen OH-03250 2017 October 10 Building Las Vegas Oral History Project In 1967, Steve Schneider arrived in Las Vegas with little money, two degrees in English, and one year of Los Angeles teaching experience. When a teaching position opened in English at Bishop Gorman High School, he gratefully accepted. His five-year teaching stint introduced him to his wife, Joyce, and a group of supportive Gorman parents. This latter group proved vital in 1972, when Schneider quit teaching, got his real estate license, and began working for Jack Mathews Realty. In 1979 Schneider, with partners Mark Miscevic (an original Flying Elvi) and Jack Woodcock, formed the Americana Group of Realtors, which affiliated with Better Homes and Gardens in 1980, later became Prudential Americana Group Realtors, then Nevada Properties Americana Group Realtors, and now Berkshire Hathaway Americana Group Realtors. Schneider explains the process of a real estate transaction, talks of referrals from Steve Wynn and other gaming executives, speaks to welcome innovations led by Hal Ober of RA Homes, highlights local real estate dreams that did not work, and examines how Special Improvement Districts (SIDs) impact master planned communities. After selling his interest in the Americana Group to original partners Miscevic and Woodcock, Schneider continues to work for the company as a salesman. Subjects: Las Vegas, NV; Real estate; REALTOR; Bishop Gorman High School; Americana Group Realtors; Prudential; Berkshire Hathaway: Jack Matthews & Co Real Estate; RA Homes; Special Improvement Districts (SIDs); Flying Elvi no 0
Schnider, Bob (Robert) and Patti (Patricia) OH-03501 2018 October 22 Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project In 1955 when Robert Schnider was 17 years of age, his family moved to Las Vegas and purchased the Capri Motel on Las Vegas Boulevard. Their plan was to move to California but they never made it. The father was a savvy businessman who would wait for all the other motels to fill their rooms and then he would turn off his 'no vacancy' sign, hike the rates, and fill up in record time. Robert's first wife was friends with Landra who would sometimes tag along when they were dating because her beau, Harry, was back in Washington, DC. Patricia Schnider grew up in the Paradise section of the county and attended the Paradise School (today's location of UNLV OLLI classes). She worked for several years in the casino industry and then in real estate where she met Robert at a divorce party. He became her insurance agent. When Robert proposed, she added three clauses to the verbal agreement to marry - he would add her name to a piece of property he had just purchased from her, he would investigate becoming a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and would agree to have more children. They have been married for over 40 years. Subjects: Mo Dalitz, Nevada Test Site, Capri Motel, Thunderbird, Hilton, Caesars Palace, Divorce Party, homesteading no 0

Schwartz, Gil and Norma OH-03242 2017 September 19, 2017 October 05, 2018 February 14 Building Las Vegas Oral History Project F849.L35 S383 2018 Session 1: Born in 1924 in the Bronx, NY, Gil Schwartz is a child of the Great Depression. Shortly after that economic calamity began, Gil's parents moved the family farther north along Long Island Sound to Rye, NY. There, Gil completed his education in local schools and matriculated to Clarkson College of Technology in Potsdam, in northern NY; after one year, in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. A medical discharge kept him out of World War II, and by 1945 he had married formed BUDD Management, the property management arm of his father's commercial real estate business. After two children, Gil and his wife separated in 1959, and Gil and his children moved to Las Vegas. Residing in the Twin Lakes area, the three began riding horses, and Gil joined the Sheriff's Mounted Posse and the Elks Club. By 1962 Gil's parents had also moved to town, and in 1963 Gil opened his own real estate office as a broker employing his father as a salesman. By 1964 he had more than 10 sales associates. Here, Schwartz describes the growth of Sahara Realty (later Sahara Realtors) from 1963 to 1982, when he sold it to Coldwell Banker; he recalls vignettes of Hank Greenspun and Kirk Kerkorian, of meeting his wife, and of selling multiple unimproved Clark County properties to Howard Nall, who purchased them on behalf of Howard Hughes, and his leadership in the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB). Subjects: Las Vegas, NV; real estate; property management; Twin Lakes; Elks Club; Sahara Realty; Howard R. Hughes; National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB); home buyers' insurance; Session 2: In this brief follow-up session Schwartz describes the houses he built on Pinto Lane in the 1960s; the Golden West Center he developed with Herb Kaufman and Herman Kishner; and the Wonder World store at Maryland Square. He recalls that Jack Entratter, president of Sands Hotel and Casino, loaned him $2,000 even though Moe Dalitz and Bernie Rothkopf at the Desert Inn Hotel and Casino chose not to give Schwartz (whom Dalitz and Rothkopf considered a "good kid") more than a $100 credit line at the Sky Room. Schwartz also remembers his parents' passings--his mother in 1975 at 75 years and his father in 1995 a few years shy of 100 years. Subjects: Las Vegas, NV; Pinto Lane; Wonder World; Maryland Square; Golden West Center; Jack Entratter; Moe Dalitz; Bernie Rothkopf; Sands Hotel and Casino; Sky Room; Desert Inn Hotel and Casino; Session 3: In this third session, Schwartz describes the unusual process he followed in 1967 and 1968 of using nominee buyers when he purchased scores of undeveloped and underdeveloped parcels in Las Vegas and North Las Vegas in behalf of Howard Hughes's land agent, J. Herbert Nall. Nominees were usually Sam Lionel, E. Parry Thomas, or Russell Webb. As Schwartz talks, he refers to maps, memos, and files he created at the time that identify local motels, gas stations, trailer parks, and property owners and speak to the range in land values and global attraction of Las Vegas real estate even in the 1960s. For example, Schwartz sold Nall several houses in Elvido Park, a modest housing development near Thunderbird Field (soon to become North Las Vegas Air Terminal), and he purchased from Adnan Khashoggi for Nall a parcel on Tropicana Avenue near Paradise Road near McCarran Field (aka Alamo Field). Some memos labeled "Alamo," "McCarran," "Strip (South Area)," "Strip (North Area)," "Strip and Tropicana Area," and "Thunderbird." Subjects: Las Vegas, NV; North Las Vegas, NV; Howard Hughes; J. Herbert Nall; land; real estate; Elvido Park; Thunderbird Field; Alamo Field; McCarran Field; Las Vegas Strip; yes 0
