Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project |
Interviewed by Claytee D. White. Wendy Starkweather served as the public face of Lied Library 20 years ago when the building was brand new. She is still in awe of the architecture, the open design, and flexible use of space. Two of her favorite memories from the many, many tours she conducted were: the head librarian at Oxford who stated that this was the best library he had ever seen and the parents who immediately knew that this is the school that their child would attend when they stepped into Lied Library's atrium. Her comments about the impact of the building are memorable. Wendy retired in 2010 and has been been busy in the political arena, travelling, and reading.
Subjects: Lied Library; Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America; Book Club
No restrictions: Collection is open for research. Where use copies do not exist, production of use copies is required before access will be granted; this may delay research requests. Advanced notice is required. |

African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project |
Interviewed by Claytee D. White. Tia Stone organized several protests and talks about the organizing steps involved in the rally and march from the Boulevard Mall to the Convention Center on Donald Trump's 74th birthday - June 14, 2020. The Boulevard Mall is at 3528 S. Maryland Parkway and the walk to the Convention Center at 3150 Paradise is 1.4 miles, an easy walk on most days. The organized crowd of approximately 800 people required more time than usual. This protest in the wake of George Floyd's murder was composed of about 20% Blacks, some Latin Americans, with a majority white contingency. Tia believes in unification and desires new and more humane protocols from the local police department and understands the importance of an effective citizen's review board. Tia has stepped away from organizing since her recent marriage.
Subjects: Black Lives Matter; LV Metropolitan Police Department; Citizens' Review Board; protest organizing tasks
No restrictions: Collection is open for research. Where use copies do not exist, production of use copies is required before access will be granted; this may delay research requests. Advanced notice is required. |
