Sitton, Pamela OH-03411 2018 March 15 Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project In 1963, Pamela Sitton arrived in Las Vegas with her parents. Her father worked at the Nevada Test Site as a carpenter. He had taken various construction jobs in different states since her earliest memories. Las Vegas High was the 12th and final school she attended before graduating. The family had lived in South Carolina, Ohio, throughout Southern California, several locations in Arizona, and finally Las Vegas, towing their home with them. Pam's love for Las Vegas can be understood and felt when she speaks about old buildings that have been destroyed for the new. "It's a travesty." She remembers the "first" indoor shopping mall at Bruce and E. Charleston that housed Carl's Shoes, a Beauty shop, hobby shop, and a movie theater; the motor courts at Bruce and Fremont, the Blue Angel Motel; and traveling to Red Rock when the pavement ended well before reaching the destination. One of Pamela's favorite memories is the celebration of the 50th anniversary of her high school graduation on the football field at the "new" location of Las Vegas High School. Her class of 1966 was the only one that did not have their graduation ceremony on the football field but at the convention center. Most of her classmates regretted not having the traditional memory so the 50th celebration remedied that. The class of 2016 treated them like royalty with a standing ovation as they enter the field, a luncheon, and iced bottles of water in the heat of the late spring season. Pamela's life work was at UNLV Libraries. Her 2009 interview (OH-01704) covers that period. Subjects: Las Vegas High School, 1966 graduation, Nevada Test Site, the Blue Angel Motel, Red Rock, graduation ceremony on the football field no 0
