Russ, J.K. OH-03381 2017 December 22 Remembering 1 October Oral History Project J.K. Russ is originally from New Zealand where she grew up on a tobacco farm. Travels took her to London, Morocco, and Egypt. She came to US in 2008 and then again 2010. She and husband loved the country, entered Green Card lottery, and won it. Both artists saw opportunities in Las Vegas that didn't seem possible in larger US cities. She has found lovely supporters of her work in downtown Las Vegas. She first lived in Summerlin but found that she was coming in and out of the Arts District almost daily. So she and her husband moved downtown and are able to walk everywhere. The quite diverse downtown arts district is near Soho Lofts, Newport Lofts, and Juhl. Homelessness is prevalent in the 3rd and Gass area but populations seem to co-exist. Everyone in New Zealand saw the TV coverage before JK and her husband. They awoke to the tragedy and immediately let family and friends know that they were okay. Her exhibit was upon invitation from the City of Las Vegas to work with a large number of cards and letters received from people all over the world - school groups, people who had gotten married here, tourists. It seemed that everyone wants to contribute to the healing of the city. Assembling the lovely cards into a cohesive image was not easy. In the near future, more greetings will be added to the initial exhibit as additional materials are received. The exhibit was Installed at City Hall first and will now move around the city to various locations. The idea is that this outpouring was for all people of the city and that everyone should be able to see it; everyone should witness this outpouring of love and respect. She will be meeting with the city's team in early 2018 to discuss other transformative developmental ideas for the exhibit and ways to make it more accessible. Young children surprised her with their wisdom in the cards they constructed and letters they wrote and sent from around the globe. This exhibit makes it possible to continue to bring people together; caring for each other. Observations and feelings: JK teaches art class at UNLV. Students in her drawing class made cards for each other to commemorate 1 October. She believes that everyone can learn to draw; it's a matter of overcoming fears. The art scene in Las Vegas is quite a melting pot of artists. She would like to see more residences for artists. Studio space for artists in the arts district is not affordable. Maybe the city can make space available by re-purposing some older buildings. Gun ownership is not as common in New Zealand as in US. Open carry was so unusual when she first arrived. Would like to see changes in gun laws after witnessing the harm of 1 October. Subjects: Arts District, NV Arts Council, New Zealand, Juhl, Newport Lofts, Soho Lofts no 0
