Rineer is an ‎Associate Principal with Simpson Coulter Studio, having joined the firm in 2004, when she was Joy Pugsley and the firm was then Welles Pugsley Architects--the firm founded by her father, David Pugsley, and his partner, David Welles. The Salt Lake City, Utah, native discusses her childhood in Spring Valley from the age of seven and attendance at Clarabelle Decker Elementary School, Kermit Booker Sixth Grade Center, Kenny Guinn Middle School, and graduating from Durango High School's first graduating class in 1995. Despite being raised by an architect, she came to architecture rather by accident only after she realized her plans to double-major in music and structural engineering did not lead to a logical career path. She explains how the architectural education, internship, testing, and licensing processes have evolved over time since she first encountered them, and how these processes formerly limited opportunities for women in architecture. Rineer also reflects on projects she has worked on personally, some her firm has done, and some that are currently on the boards. Rineer, Joy OH-03363 2017 December 07 Remembering 1 October Oral History Project Joy Rineer is a Las Vegas architect whose firm is currently working on the new creative space on the first floor of Lied Library. Her firm also designed the Resilience Center for those affected by the shooting on October 1. Just like the Memory Garden, this huge space was donated, remolded, designed, outfitted, and decorated in six days. The firm's interior designer located fabrics, furniture, rugs, painting, and decorations in record time. Then collaborators valleywide came together to assemble the space into an office, comfort rooms, and caring spaces to meet the 6-day deadline. Juice is a good thing. When the Fire Chief called Rineer's colleague at Simpson Coulter Studio, the firm's opportunity to help was realized. They sprang into action and their desire to help our grief-stricken city with expert architectural skills allowed them to give back. Rineer saw her city react as a community whose heart blood spread rapidly. Her Leadership Las Vegas class amassed care packages, gave special cards of thanks to out-of-town first responders, and organized a blood drive that will become an annual event. Life changed and the good still shows. Subjects: Red Cross, Scott Emerson, Fire Chief, Leadership Las Vegas, Resilience Center, Interior Designer, Simpson Coulter Studio no 0
