African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project |
Interviewed by Claytee D. White. Daryl Privott was hired as the facilities manager for the move from Dickerson Library into Lied. He had just completed a move at NASA and was the right person at the perfect time. Working full time at UNLV, he completed his master's and PhD degrees here before moving to Lexington, KY. HIs is a story of perfect timing, love of family, and understanding the value of a two-PhD household. HIs early life is a confluence of rural and urban; wisdom and awakening to an understanding of how the world works, and sharecropping which is a world of its own. HIs existence is a study in Black migration in the 20th Century.
Subjects: sharecropping; Lied Library; UNLV; Edenton, NC; Lexington, KY
No restrictions: Collection is open for research. Where use copies do not exist, production of use copies is required before access will be granted; this may delay research requests. Advanced notice is required. |

Las Vegas Women Oral History Project |
F849.L35 R343 2015 Renée grew up in a family of fifteen children. In 1956 she married musician Roger Rampton, a successful percussionist. They soon moved to Las Vegas where Roger performed on the Strip. She remained active in her Mormon faith and the Church's music ministry. When the Clark County School District was going to cut their music programs in the early 1970s, she became a vocal community opponent. In the 1970s the Mormon Church opposed the Equal Rights Amendment. Reńee wasn't comfortable with the Church's involvement in this political issue, and she joined forces with those working to ratify the amendment. She and Roger divorced during this period, she went back to school and got her education degree and became an elementary school teacher. Renée continued teaching until she turned seventy. |
