Building Las Vegas Oral History Project |
Mike Mullin is the founder of Nevada Hand, the state's largest nonprofit dedicated to the development, management, and administration of high-quality homes and supportive services for working families and seniors with fixed incomes. CEO Mike Mullin founded Nevada Hand in 1993 and retired from the successful enterprise in September 2019, one week prior to this interview. Mike was born in Akron, Ohio, grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, and moved with the family to Rockford, Ill in 10th grade. After a few years in college, he moved to Las Vegas to try his poker skills while living in his van in the Golden Nuggett parking lot. After a month, he moved into an apartment and went to school to become a craps dealer. In 1984, he went into real estate development and in 1993, filed for the Articles of Incorporation for a nonprofit that became Nevada Hand. He and his family lived of credit cards, personal loans, and a few real estate transactions until Nevada Hand began to flourish. At his retirement, the organization has 4200 units and 7200 residents. Mike Mullin is now seeking his next venture. Blue Diamond Oral History Project |
This is the history of Blue Diamond Village. Blue Diamond is located 26 miles
southwest of Las Vegas. The village, originally known as Cottonwood Springs, changed its name when the Blue Diamond Company took ownership of the Gypsum mine and built corporate housing for the workers in the early '20s. Near the base of the Red Rock canyon, Blue Diamond Village was originally a stop on the Old Spanish Trail for traders from Santa Fe, N.M., to California between 1830 and 1848, according to the history committee's findings. road for the The Blue Diamond School opened in 1929. The company built bunk housing and homes for the workers that it started selling to the public in 1965. |

He arrived in the Westside in 1960; knows community leaders especially those in the spiritual community - Bishop Cox, Rev. Coleman, and Bishop Rogers; and worked as a carpenter, trained by Local 1780 through their 4-year educational program. Worked with J.A. Tiberti for 17 years. |

This Las Vegas native recalls his childhood in the Westside's Cadillac Arms, Windsor Park, and Bonanza Village neighborhoods, where he attended Bonanza Elementary School, Gibson Junior High School, and Western High School, before attending Colorado State University on a basketball scholarship. Graduating in Economics, Myles worked transportation sales before returning to Las Vegas, where he worked at McCarran Airport, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC), and the Las Vegas Monorail. In this interview, Myles gives a short history of corporate gaming mergers as they apply to Monorail transit in Southern Nevada and speaks to the future of Monorail transport relative to the airport, Maryland Parkway, and Downtown Las Vegas. |
