Building Las Vegas Oral History Project |
F849.L35 N43 2017 With 15 years of planning experience, a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture with emphasis on Urban Planning, and an M.S. degree in Urban Planning, Brad Nelson had no hesitation in accepting an offer from Mark Fine to move to Henderson to help master plan Green Valley. Arriving with his wife and two young children in 1984, he set to work on entitlements and master planning. He recalls planning various parcels, the village of Silver Springs, the village of Fox Ridge, the Fountains, and the Green Valley Athletic Club. He discusses the Green Valley ethos of planning for a good quality of family life by making space for churches, schools, and parks; providing a variety of housing price points, public art, and open space and working with homeowners' associations; and developing golf courses, fighting the "Water Wars" of the 1970s and 1980s, and introducing SPUIs--Single Point Urban Interchanges. He remembers staying with American Nevada Corporation until 1999, when he was recruited by Ron Boeddeker, to take over as the COO of Lake Las Vegas. Boeddeker's vision of creating LLV as a resort community was ultimately thwarted by distance and the economy. Nelson left in 2006, when the Park Cattle Co. of Minden, NV, hired him to help them manage their portfolio of land, casinos, and the Edgewood Golf Course in Lake Tahoe. After reorganizing and rebranding the company as Edgewood Companies, he retired in 2010, and returned to Southern Nevada and Lake Las Vegas. Subjects: Henderson, NV; Green Valley; Lake Las Vegas; Urban planning; Master planning; Master-planned communities; Water Wars; Park Cattle Co.; Edgewood Companies; Minden, NV |

Remembering 1 October Oral History Project |
Interviewed by Claytee White. Ashley Nitz and her girlfriend Laura made plans to attend the Route 91 Country music festival as a "staycation" weekend at the Trump. Neither wanted to pay for VIP seating but found the House of Blues tent that contained an upstairs area for VIPs. They paid the extra $100 on Saturday evening and found it was a perfect space for enjoying the concert. As on Friday night, they left early. Sunday night, they returned to the House of Blues tent and vowed to stay until the end. But as the concert wore on, they changed their minds and were heading across the venue as the first shots rang out. They were heading away from the Mandalay Bay and ran toward the exit that they had used to enter and exit on Las Vegas Blvd, farthest away from the hotel. They ran toward the Tropicana and hid in the lobby behind a planter well before the hotel went into lock down mode. They hid for a while because they could not determine what was happening - Who was shooting? Were there numerous shooters? Was he/she/they in the hotel? Soon, the Tropicana ran announcements that the doors were being locked and gave instructions where everyone should go. Even hotel guests in rooms had to congregate in the appointed convention center area. Medical assistance, water, and other aide were provided there. Finally, in the wee hours of the morning people were allowed to leave the premises. Transportation was almost at a standstill. Getting back to the Trump proved to be a real challenge. But friends and family knew that Ashley was safe because she charged her phone at the Tropicana and contacted people who spread the good news. But what she witnessed will never be forgotten. Ashley is proud of the Las Vegas response. She was probably inundated more than many because a day or so before Route 91, she had just returned from delivering supplies to Houston and surrounding areas in Texas. Subjects: Houston, House of Blues, Trump Tower, Assistance League, Tropicana Hotel Casino, Big & Rich, Jake Owen, Jason Aldean, Uber, Heather, the bartender |
