Standing in the crowd on the Mandalay Bay side behind the VIP section, the two women were covered by her son as soon as the shooting began. When there was a brief pause in firing, they ran toward the vendor booths. They could hear and see bullets landing all around them. The scene became surreal as vendors guided them behind the booths and silently took down fencing. The three ran without stopping holding onto each other. They were taken in my people who had rented a nearby apartment, rather than a hotel room, for the festival. They stayed in complete darkness all night until picked up by a SWAT officer who was a friend of her son's. She never actually saw the faces of the other people and can't even be sure of the exact number hiding in the apartment. Today, she is thankful and guilty. Diane takes care of her husband, volunteers at Lou Ruvo by teaching a Caregiver's class, and helps a group with her therapy dog. She is a giver. This experience had made her more thoughtful and more patient. Diane regrets that she could not stop to help others as she escaped the venue. Merolle, Doris; Rosenberg, Alan; Rosenberg, David OH-03544 2018 December 19 Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project This is the story of Doris Merolle (born 4/12/1939) and her two brothers, David (born 5/18/1952) and Alan (born 5/10/1948) Rosenberg. The brothers met Doris for the first time in mid-December 2018. The 2018 letter from her brother David lead to an instant phone call to New York and to a visit from her brothers within a few weeks. Doris' father left Holland for New York just prior to the German invasion. The husband left to prepare a home for his daughter and wife in America but the invasion halted their reunification. Finally, when Doris and her mother left the internment camps in 1945 and made their way to New York, the husband/father had started another family that produced Alan and David. When David retired in 2016, he began an ancestry quest based upon bits of information he had heard over the years. Astonishingly, at one period, the siblings lived very near each other in the Bronx. But the father never discussed his other family though Doris would get visits from him from time to time over the years. Doris migrated to Las Vegas in 1986 following her mother whose desire to leave New York took her out West. Doris was finally convinced to join her mother after years of hearing about the wonders of the desert. Doris never developed that same affection for Las Vegas.
