African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project |
Interviewed by Claytee D. White. Barbara Carter and Ethel Smith grew up on the Westside in the 1950s, both born in the late 1940s. They attended the Westside School. Their memories of the city are colorful, vibrant, and clear. They loved school and excelled in the assigned work. After high school, before their chosen careers, both tried work as a maid and found the sexual harassment a real challenge. Their memories of entertainment, fun, customs, and business locations on Jackson Av and the surrounding Black business community, related on their walk down memory lane, provided good historical information. Barbara Carter entered banking at Valley Bank and Ethel Smith, the casino industry, at a time when the MOB ran Las Vegas. Their recollections remind us that businesses operated differently and these women were there to witness it.
Subjects: Westside; Jackson Av; MOB; La Concha Motel; Berkley Square; Valley Bank; Caesars Palace; Ash Resnick; Jackson Hotel

F849.L35 M22 2006 Florence Alberta Schilling was born in southern Illinois. She worked for the war effort during World War II and met her husband James McClure, and they married in 1945. After he retired from the military, Florence worked in the hotel industry. In 1966 she was invited by Burton Cohen in Los Angeles to move with him to Las Vegas to build the new Frontier Hotel and Casino. After the Frontier was completed, she moved with Cohen to the Desert Inn in 1967 and worked as the executive office manager. After a few years she left the hotel industry and completed her college degree. Florence graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1971 with a BA in sociology with an emphasis on criminology. She had been a member of the League of Women Voters for a few years, and with a small group of individuals, she began the organization Community Action Against Rape, which was renamed the Rape Crisis Center in 1973. Over the next decade she worked to change attitudes and reshape policy on the issue of sexual assault. Florence also advocated for locating the women's prison near Las Vegas. |

This is the history of Blue Diamond Village. Blue Diamond is located 26 miles
southwest of Las Vegas. The village, originally known as Cottonwood Springs, changed its name when the Blue Diamond Company took ownership of the Gypsum mine and built corporate housing for the workers in the early '20s. Near the base of the Red Rock canyon, Blue Diamond Village was originally a stop on the Old Spanish Trail for traders from Santa Fe, N.M., to California between 1830 and 1848, according to the history committee's findings. road for the The Blue Diamond School opened in 1929. African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project |
Interviewed by Claytee D. White. Trula McGee grew up in a military family where children were well behaved, intelligent, and an asset to the family's community representation. She migrated to Las Vegas in 1952 and lived for a short time in Carver Park in Henderson and attended Basic High School. McGee lived on the Westside as a young adult and remembers the Golden West Shopping Center, Reubens Supper Club (H & Owens), Larry's Sight and Sound, and other Westside locations. The family shopped for clothing at Sears and JC Penney in the downtown area. McGee worked as a teller at Nevada State Bank but soon found lucrative employment in the gaming industry as a Keno writer and runner. She worked at the Sands, Castaways, Silver Slipper, and other hotel casinos. She became close to Wayne Newton and Marvin Gaye.
