This is the history of Blue Diamond Village. Blue Diamond is located 26 miles
southwest of Las Vegas. The village, originally known as Cottonwood Springs, changed its name when the Blue Diamond Company took ownership of the Gypsum mine and built corporate housing for the workers in the early '20s. Near the base of the Red Rock canyon, Blue Diamond Village was originally a stop on the Old Spanish Trail for traders from Santa Fe, N.M., to California between 1830 and 1848, according to the history committee's findings. road for the The Blue Diamond School opened in 1929. Stavan Corbett is a member of the Latino community that has served as an educator and politician in Las Vegas. Growing up in Las Vegas, Stavan was exposed to various environments that all helped him shape his Latino identity. Stavan was able to appreciate the Catholic and Jewish cultures as well. During the 70s and 80s his experiences with first and second generation Latinos, played a large role in his identity formation especially as a student. He was the first in his family to graduate from high school and college. Stavan worked in the hotel industry and moved on to work with troubled youth to eventually become a member of the Nevada State Board and the Clark County School Board. His continued work with the Latin Chamber of Commerce has also allowed him to be involved with the Latino Youth Leadership Conference. Catherine Cortez Masto grew up in Las Vegas near where the town ended and the desert began, which at that time was near Decatur and Pennwood. She grew up playing in the streets and riding horses and motor bikes with girlfriends and cousins. Her father, Manny Cortez, began as a valet at the Dunes before entering politics. He served 16 years on the County Commission and then 13 years as the chief of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. As the head of the LVCVA, Manny oversaw campaigns to increase tourism, enlarge McCarran International Airport, improve taxicab service, and served as a visionary for the entire region. Catherine followed in her father's footsteps while being her own woman and making her own mark on the region. She attended college at UNR and law school at Gonzaga University School of Law. After a clerkship, she worked for a small local Las Vegas firm for 4 - 5 years, then moved to the governor's and then served two terms as Nevada's Attorney General. Currently she's in the US Senate with committee assignments that include Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; Energy and Natural Resources; Commerce, Science, and Transportation; Rules and Administration; Indian Affairs, and the Committee on Aging. Oral history interview with Jocelyn Cortez conducted by Nathalie Martinez on May 18, 2019 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. In this interview, Cortez discusses her family history in El Salvador and her parents' emigration to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1980. She talks about the challenge of adjusting to city life, growing up on the Eastside of Las Vegas, and her educational experience. Cortez describes her involvement in the Student Organization of Latinos (SOL), and attending law school at the University of Arizona. Later, Cortez discusses the challenges of being an immigration attorney, and being elected president of the Latino Bar Association. Lastly, Cortez talks about changes in Las Vegas and the Latinx community. |

F850.S75 C67 2018 Joseph Cortez was born in Spanish Harlem in 1943. Cortez recalls growing up in the tough neighborhood, walking through gang territory in order to get to school. Cortez found himself interested in boxing at an early age and he attributes the boxing gloves hanging from his backpack as the reason he was left alone by the bullies in his neighborhood. Cortez won several Golden Glove tournaments during his amateur career. Cortez then turned pro, winning several fights before joining the military. Once Cortez left the military he left boxing to start several businesses before ultimately returning to boxing as a ref. Cortez career as a ref has spanned decades, participating in several elite level boxing matches with several of the biggest names in boxing. Ellen Cosgrove, MD, grew up in Pennsylvania and lived there through medical school where she met her husband. She and Jeffrey Fahl, MD, sat together because classes were arranged in alphabetical order. She and her five sisters are all well educated and working in "helping" occupations. She chose internal medicine over Russian History and has enjoyed her journey into medical school curriculum development. Because of her work, the UNLV School of Medicine has an educational program based in bioethics, community engagement, wellness, and problem-based learning. The first class of the new medical school will graduate after she leaves the city for a position in Albany, NY.
