Castillo, Martin Lopez OH-03716 2020-01-11 Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project Oral history interview with Martin Lopez-Castillo conducted by Nathalie Martinez, Elsa Lopez, and Barbara Tabach on January 11, 2020 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Martin Lopez Castillo was born in a small town in the State of Mexico. He immigrated to Phoenix, Arizona in the early '90s where he worked in construction and landscaping. Eventually, he made his way to Colorado where he began working as a cook. He moved to Las Vegas with his family in the early 2000s where he arrived in Las Vegas' Downtown. He worked in the mine by Primm, Nevada before becoming a gardener. His work has allowed him to see the changes that have happened in Southern Nevada, and he recounts the changes that have happened in Downtown Las Vegas since the 2008 recession. He is a self-taught English speaker and an avid chess collector. Subjects discussed include: Immigration, Chess, Landscaping, Teaching, and Downtown Las Vegas. Chanderraj, Radha OH-03707 2020 November 09 Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project Born and raised in a large, professional family in Bombay (Mumbai), India, Radha Chanderraj arrived in Las Vegas in 1981, shortly after marrying in her husband's home town of Hyderabad. The couple first lived near Arville between Charleston and Sahara but later moved closer to Sunrise Hospital and the cardiology practice of her husband, Raj. They socialized with about five other local Indian families--a few physicians, UNLV professors, and Nevada Test Site scientists. Although she had completed law school in India, Nevada did not recognize her degree; she enrolled in accounting classes and earned her CPA. In 1999 Gov. Chatterson, Harold OH-00745 1972 October 17 Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas Herman Grijalva interviews Harold Chatterson (born in Miles City, Montana) about the history of Southern Nevada. Chatterson made a permanent move to Nevada on December 9th, 1950. After living in California he relocated to Las Vegas for construction work opportunities. As a construction worker, he built houses and worked on some of the buildings on Nellis Air Force Base. Economically, he recalls that the first and only bank in Las Vegas at the time was the First National Bank of Nevada and that homesteading was common practice when it came to land ownership. Chatterson describes witnessing the first early above ground atomic test explosion in Las Vegas. He mentions Howard Hughes, the development of the Strip, Downtown and the Union Pacific Railroad. A major local event that he remembers during that time was the Helldorado Parade. He also recalls the 1942 crash of Carole Lombard’s plane. yes 1

Chavez left his home country in the pursuit of liberty and found himself in Brazil. After spending a few years in Brazil, Chavez came to the United States on a student visa to learn English. Chavez arrived in Florida where he met his wife. After a divorce, Chavez made his way to Las Vegas where he found his calling. While in Las Vegas, Chavez founded the international carnival parade. Chicas, Victor OH-03564 2019 February 15 Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project Victor Chicas describes his childhood as strenuous and full of violence. He grew up in war-torn El Salvador during the late sixties. Victor was very involved in the politics at the time, and was frequently caught up in dangerous protests against the Salvadorian police forces. Mass riots at Victor's university coupled with financial insecurities made it impossible to finish school, so he dropped out during his last year to make the journey to the United States. Victor recounts the arduous trek to reach Los Angeles. Victor talks about the different states his family has lived in and compares them to the quality of life he has found in Las Vegas. Victor lives here with his five children who either live with him or nearby. He currently works at the Mandalay Bay. He also describes the night of October 1st.
