Dominguez, Andres OH-03556 2019 February 11 Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project Andres Dominguez was born and raised in Las Vegas. His early childhood memories include visiting his grandfather's barbershop in El Cortez Hotel and Casino. Dominguez recalls his first job being a floor sweeper for his father's shop. As he got older, Dominguez decided to leave behind college and follow his grandfather's footsteps. After investing years in the profession, Dominguez was able to secure his grandfather's original location and reopen the chop his grandfather worked decades earlier. Donnerly, Ralph E. OH-00479 June 30, 2006 Blue Diamond Oral History Project This is the history of Blue Diamond Village. Blue Diamond is located 26 miles southwest of Las Vegas. The village, originally known as Cottonwood Springs, changed its name when the Blue Diamond Company took ownership of the Gypsum mine and built corporate housing for the workers in the early '20s. Near the base of the Red Rock canyon, Blue Diamond Village was originally a stop on the Old Spanish Trail for traders from Santa Fe, N.M., to California between 1830 and 1848, according to the history committee's findings. road for the The Blue Diamond School opened in 1929. Drew, Barbara Jean OH-03780 2021-05-17 African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project Interviewed by Claytee D. White. Barbara Drew is the dean of the Academy for Ministers, teaches Bible study, and performs other spiritual work at New Jerusalem Worship Center. Drew migrated to Las Vegas from Fortune Fork, Louisiana, just two miles outside the city limits of Tallulah. She traveled by car where passengers slept, ate, and talked about their new lives-to-be. She lived with an aunt on D and Monroe in a shack with a butane stove and no indoor toilet. Her first job was at American Linen. This interview covers life in the Black community beginning when Drew arrived in 1961. She spoke about the importance of businesses like the Brown Derby, Hamburger Heaven, and the Town Tavern that hosted jazz on Sunday afternoons with a dance floor that she enjoyed. The job that taught her about life was running a Dry Cleaners owned by Phil Shapiro who taught her everything about business operations, purchasing property for her family, bookkeeping, and the importance of having a bank account. She spoke of a neighborhood where neighbors helped neighbors and opportunities that flourished throughout the Black community.
