Remembering 1 October Oral History Project |
Neysa Davis Tonks was murdered at the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival on October 1, 2017. Her parents, Debbie and Chris Davis and sister Mynda Smith, are forming a Foundation, Fifty-Eight Loved and Never Forgotten, to help educate the children of all 58 families. Neysa, a single mother, leaves behind three sons, 24, 18, and 15 years of age. Debbie and Chris have moved into her home to assure love, support, stability, and constancy in their grandsons' lives. On the Sunday evening of the tragic event, Neysa's friend covered her body with his own even after knowing the shot to her head had been fatal. He was wounded with shrapnel completely down one side of his body. Mynda was awakened by a phone call from Greysen, Neysa's youngest son and the family began to gather. The next morning, Debbie and Chris flew in from their vacation and the family began the search for Neysa's body. Twenty-four hours after the shooting had begun, she was located at the coroner's office listed as a Jane Doe. She was beautiful. Technologent, the company where Neysa worked, arranged the Red Rock memorial for the family. The family learned for the first time how important Neysa's role in the company had been. They were in awe, admired her even more, and now understood her naps during family gatherings. Debbie, Chris, and Mynda believe that "darkness cannot exist in the presence of light. Neysa's light will shine forever." Subjects: Acts of Kindness, Neysa Davis Tonks, crosses, 58 Loved and Never Forgotten Foundation, Fabulous Freddy's |

African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project |
Interviewed by Claytee D. White. Gerald Davis was falsely arrested on a Sunday afternoon in October 1969, taken to jail, and spent the night there even though one police officer tried to correct the disrespectful behavior of his partner. This action led to a 3-day riot in the Black Westside community of Las Vegas. Davis was born in Las Vegas in a home at 1223 North H Street and remembers businesses like the Cove, the Louisiana Club, Hamburger Heaven, Town
Tavern, and the Brown Derby, his favorite night spot even when he was too young to enter the establishment. HIs work included Republic Service and the Clark County School District (CCDS).
Dianna Davis also worked at CCSD after a short stint as a maid where she was accosted by a hotel visitor and worked in fear afterwards. But CCSD was better. She became a baker at the location that supplied food for all the schools in the county. Her fond memory is her favorite teacher, Mrs. Moten, who instilled a pride in blackness in her African American students. [Mrs. Moten is the mother of Fred Moten, the critical thinker of our times who is Professor of Performance Studies at NY University.]
Subjects: 1969 riot; Jackson Av; Officer Arrington; Westside School; Charles Wyatt; Moten
No restrictions: Collection is open for research. Where use copies do not exist, production of use copies is required before access will be granted; this may delay research requests. Advanced notice is required. |

Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project |
Nancy Deaner is a Nevadan who grew up in both Reno and Las Vegas. She enjoyed a childhood packed with fun activities and good friends. She loved the smells after a rain shower, Big Rock Candy, and the elegance of the Sands where her father worked as a 21 dealer. As a teenager, she worked in advertising for businesses like Von Tobel's Hardware store, Ronzoni's, Montgomery Wards, and the Boulevard Mall. After her daughter was born, Nancy entered the gaming industry as a cocktail waitress and worked at the Mint for four years while sometimes adding hours at Circus Circus Hotel Casino. After living in Hawaii and Reno, she returned to the city, remarried, assisted in making Shade Tree a respected household name, and entered college at UNLV earning a bachelor's degree and in 1991 her MFA. Before graduation though, she was offered 'the' job with the City of Las Vegas that piggy-backed on the gallery work she had relished and successfully executed at UNLV. She soon became the Cultural Affairs Director for the City. Her contributions to our city are numerous. As the Cultural Affairs Director, she began the intricate ground-floor work on both the Neon Museum and the MOB Museum. Then came the Arts District. Nancy Deaner's work made a profound contribution to Las Vegas and her memories are exceptional. Subjects: Nevada Institute of the Arts, Shade Tree, MOB Museum, NEON Museum, La Concha Motel Lobby, Culinary Union, Carol Goldstein, Robert Chattel, Berry, Arts Council, Arts District, College of Southern Nevada |
