| Chuc, Hugo | OH-03527 | 2018 December 06 | Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project | Growing up in Guatemala, Hugo's life was often unstable due to economic difficulties. His mother raised six children including Hugo, and because of their financial struggles Hugo and some of his brothers had to begin work at a young age. Hugo's early life was a combination of school, working on the coffee bean farms, and playing with his best friend Tonyo. Once Hugo turned nineteen, he decided to make the journey to the United States. He said farewell to his family and started the ten day journey to Santa Ana. He found work and supported himself for a few years before meeting his future life partner, Annalisa, in church. The couple was very happy in California, but eventually the cost of living became too much, so they moved their growing family to Las Vegas. Hugo found work at the Apex construction, which was where he was first introduced to the Culinary Union. He became increasingly involved in union work, despite the backlash he received from his employers. Hugo is grateful for the training he has received at the Union because now he feels capable of informing even complete strangers about the importance of being unionized. Hugo firmly believes in standing up for your rights, especially when others are trying to hold you down. Interview is in Spanish. | Ciccolo, Michael | OH-03480 | 2018 September 18 | Remembering 1 October Oral History Project | Dr. Michael Leo Ciccolo worked at Sunrise Hospital in the early morning after the mass shooting on October 1. He participated in two surgeries, one lasting four hours that repaired the heart of a survivor. Though he never met that person, he did witness the later return of one person who came back to thank the hospital staff. Although one side of her face was paralyzed, she only expressed gratitude. As a doctor trained in Iowa, Arizona, and California, Mike and his family love Las Vegas. He trained at the University of Iowa, University of Arizona, and University of Southern California. Medicine brought him to the desert. His thoughts after the October 1 tragedy, include the belief that as a society, we are not grateful enough, not just for the big things in our lives but for the tiny things. The other emotion he discussed is anger. Believing that anger triggered the actions of the shooter even though seemingly Stephen Paddock enjoyed the American dream. Mike is torn about the issue of guns. He grew up where guns were a part of a hunting and sporting culture. While he believes that guns are almost essential for home protection, there is a responsibility that goes along with ownership of a weapon. The village, originally known as Cottonwood Springs, changed its name when the Blue Diamond Company took ownership of the Gypsum mine and built corporate housing for the workers in the early '20s. | Cluff, Danny | OH-03364 | 2017 December 08 | Remembering 1 October Oral History Project | Danny Cluff is a ware-houseman at the MGM Grand Hotel Casino. He likes country music because it's about peace and love where Rap is negative. And Route 91 demonstrated that love and peace until the third evening at almost ten o'clock. Shots rained down disrupting the tranquil festival. Danny and his girlfriend, Melissa, got separated from his eighteen-year old nephew. But via cell phone he discovered that his nephew was home in Henderson, through the mercy of strangers, before eleven o'clock. He had protected Melissa with his own body and then they ran. The route of Danny, Melissa, and two random strangers, now friends for life, veered to the Tropicana and on to a darkened stairwell in Hooters. They hid. Danny made light of the situation to push back the fear. Finally, they left that makeshift sanctuary and ran across Tropicana Avenue where they had parked their car. It was 3:00 o'clock in the morning. Danny is a poet who has 58 more reasons to pray at night and 58 more reasons to change his life. He wants to write and write, he will.
