Born in Washington, DC, Bryan grew up in Las Vegas attending Fifth Street Grammar School and Las Vegas High School where he reveled in the academic, social, and civic experience every day of the four years. But at UNR, he learned to become a statesman, making friends from across the state. At Hastings College of Law, he studied more rigorously than at any other time to ensure his future success. Bryan held other offices as well as those mentioned above. Immediately after law school, he became a Deputy District Attorney, helped to start the Public Defender's Office, served in the Assembly and State Senate and finally before becoming Governor, served as the State Attorney General. As a young Las Vegan, Bryan grew up in the shadow of WWII. The Huntridge Community saved aluminum foil and grew victory gardens. His father worked at Basic Magnesium Incorporated, a place where magnesium was processed to build bullets and airplanes for the war effort. He and his friends enjoyed Helldorado, swam in the Biltmore pool, and worked odd jobs during high school. Today, from his 14th floor office window, one can see the eastern, southern, and western expanse of the Las Vegas Valley. He can look upon the area of his first home, first school, and glory in the growth of the town of approximately two million people. When he arrived in the early 1940s, the count grew from 14,000 to 35,000 during the war years. He has seen it all.
