Community Archives Workshop

Southern Nevada Community Archives Workshop

Special Collections and Archives (video) part of the University Libraries, focuses on preserving the history of Las Vegas and the Southern Nevada region. Some of our work includes preserving documents and photographs, but we also digitize materials, and collect oral history interviews with local residents.

The resource materials were very clear and accessible, even for people who are not familiar with collecting and maintaining records.

I am motivated—“one bite at a time.” I worked on pictures and documents stored in my garage this afternoon. Thank you for the information and inspiration. Excellent job!

As part of our work, we actively offer the Community Archives Workshop program each February; reaching out to Las Vegas community organizations who may be interested in learning how to organize and preserve their own historical archives, digitize their materials, manage born-digital content, and/or conduct oral history interviews.

Following a series of presentations, the workshop offers additional time for attendees to tour Special Collections and Archives, view our Digital Collections digitization lab, or spend one-on-one time with the instructors for additional information on how to apply archives techniques to your specific materials. Lunch and refreshments are provided as well as time to socialize with other local organizations. At the end of the day, attendees have an opportunity to obtain kits containing archival supplies to use as they begin to organize and preserve their materials.
