Abstract

The National Organization for Women, Las Vegas Chapter Records document the philosophy, activities, and politics of the National Organization for Women (NOW) from 1966 to 2009 with most materials covering the period of 1971 to 1974. The records demonstrate the activities and political positions of NOW and they include correspondence, policies, memoranda, files, publications, and ephemera from the Las Vegas, Nevada chapter.

The National Organization for Women, Las Vegas Chapter Records documents the philosophy, activities, and politics of the National Organization of Women from 1966 to 2005 with most materials covering the period of 1971 to 1974. It includes administrative records of the Las Vegas, Nevada chapter, files from NOW task forces, information on NOW-related issues like abortion and the Equal Rights Amendment, newsletters from NOW chapters around the United States, and NOW ephemera.

Biographical / Historical Note

The National Organization for Women (NOW) was formed in 1966 after the founding members became frustrated by the inaction of the United States government following the National Conference of Commissions on the Status of Women report that found widespread discrimination against women. Betty Friedan, prominent feminist and author of The Feminine Mystique, invited a group of women to discuss alternative strategies. At this meeting, where they decided to form a separate civil rights organization dedicated to achieving full equality for women.

NOW was incorporated in Washington, D.C. on February 10, 1967, after finalization of its National Constitution and bylaws. Task forces were established to deal with several women's issues, including employment, education, religion, poverty, law, politics, and image in the media. Committees were organized to handle finance, membership, public relations, legislation, and legal activities. Today, NOW continues to pursue its mission.

Acquisition Note

Materials were donated in 1995 by Lynn Cleary and 2017 by Joanne Goodwin; accession numbers 1995-030 and 2017-029.

Processing Note

Materials were processed by Caryll Batt Dziedziak in 1995. In 2014, as part of a legacy finding aid conversion project, Lindsay Oden revised and enhanced the collection description to bring it into compliance with current professional standards. Subsequently Lindsay Oden entered the data into ArchivesSpace.
