School administrator with CCSD; experiences are relevant to today's inequities that are being highlighted across the country. Studies show Nevada schools at the bottom of the nation when comparing black graduation rates, school to prison pipeline, and low enrollment in upper level college-bound courses. |

F849.L35 P45 2017 Born and raised in East Los Angeles, Sandra moved during High School to Porterville, in California's Central Valley . She returned to Los Angeles in 1993 to work with Parsons-Dillingham on the Metrolink project in the early phases of construction. Although she knew no one when she moved to Las Vegas in 1995, her prior history with Parsons-Dillingham enabled her to easily obtain work with Parsons Construction as project site administrator for the construction of Rancho High School Phase 1. At the conclusion of that job in about 1998, she was hired by Richardson Construction, where she has worked as project administrator ever since. |

Rick moved to Nevada in 1962 and lived in Blue Diamond. He learned and worked in various positions at the mine and plant to ensure employment stability. He shares stories of the town being owned by the mine - housing, general store - equating it to Tennessee Ernie Ford's I Owe My Soul to the Company Store. After moving into security, he worked through the Teamsters Union at the Aladdin and then 46 years at Caesars Palace. He knew and worked with with members of Las Vegas families that operated well after the advent of Howard Hughes. |

Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project |
F850.S75 P47 2018 Frankie Perez was born in Southern California, moved to Arizona, and finally settled with his family in Las Vegas at the age of thirteen. He attended Cheyenne High School where he became very involved with athletics. Growing up he identified as a woman, specifically a "Stud"--which describes a masculine lesbian. Frankie entered the Air Force after graduating and began to explore different gender and sexuality labels, until in 2015 when he took on the identity of a Trans male. He now uses he/him/el pronouns. His experiences in the military taught him a lot about how his new identity would affect and change his life. He currently lives with his maternal grandmother, and is a full time student at UNLV studying Gender and Sexuality. Frankie is hoping to become a Marriage and Family Counselor. Frankie is involved in a lot of Trans activism, specifically with the Latinx community. Subjects: Transgender, Military, Activism, Gender roles, intersectionality |

Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project |
Nick grew up in the East in a musical family that played many instruments and sang. After high school and the US Navy, he moved to Florida and then to Las Vegas. He tried to wait for Gaming to come to Florida. It did not so he followed the MOB to Las Vegas on Labor Day in September 1961. Nick knew and interacted with Culinary Union secretary-treasurer, Al Bramlett, Jack Entratter, Frank Sinatra, and many others. He served as a bellman at the Sands for eight years and then Caesars Palace for 39 years. He turned down the opportunity to climb the corporate ladder by becoming a dealer and moving up in the casino industry. He saw that life as hazardous to his health. From the age of ten, he worked as a caddy and met many high rollers, casino owners, and entertainers on the golf course. Subjects: Cuba, Miami, MOB, Cleveland, Jack Entratter, Rat Pack, Culinary Union, Jilly, Jimmy Gay, Sands, Caesars Palace |

Douglas Peterson was one of the first three hires in the Music Department at UNLV. When hired in 1967, the school was Nevada Southern University. In 1968, he became music director of the Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society. Soon, he was director. He completed a bachelor's degree in psychology at Grinnell College, another bachelor's in music at Florida State University, and a master's and doctorate in musical arts, choral performance, and vocal pedagogy at the University of Iowa. In 2003, Peterson retired from UNLV and focused primarily on the Musical Arts Society composed of 60 voices. They perform two choral/symphonic concerts a year - a Christmas concert and one other. One is planned on this Easter Sunday of 2018. For the past few years, the Society sang backup to Andrea Bocelli in his annual performance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Peterson recently turned 92 years of age and is still conducting the great sacred masterworks. His favorites are Bach cantatas and masses, Beethoven's Choral Fantasia, Mass in C and Ninth Symphony, Brahms, Dvorak, Handel, the the Haydn masses, Vivaldi, Verdi Schumann, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Mozart. Additionally, he adores Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and pops. Although much of the classical music audience in Las Vegas has diminished, he has no plans to retire. "I love music that much. It's infectious. The environments I've been in have been so productive in shaping me that the motivation is forever with me, even now. I can't let go." Subjects: Classical music, Grinnell College, Bottoms Up, Andrea Bocelli, Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society |

Remembering 1 October Oral History Project |
Greg Phelps is a financial planner with twin sons. Greg, his wife, Katrina, and his mother, Diane Meireis, attended the Route 91 Festival together. The three day concert was the most heavenly gathering possible. On all three evenings they settled in almost the same spot near the stage on the Mandalay Bay side of the venue. They met and made friends with several couples who also chose the same area to enjoy the festivities. Though the beer flowed freely, there were no disagreements, just laughter, great music, and good conversations among the 22,000 attendees. Peace, ease, and calmness best describe the atmosphere. However, on Sunday evening the calm was interrupted by gun shots raining down from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel Casino. At first, the shots sounded like fireworks but Greg was concerned because his grandfather had taught him to shoot and respect guns at eleven years of age. He immediately pulled his mother underneath himself, hit the ground, grabbing his wife who was standing farther away, and tucked her in as well. As soon as the volley of shots ended, he instructed them to run. He took Katrina's hand and she grasped Diane's. They ran and held on to each other for dear life. Diane remembers running by bodies. Greg had tunnel vision, saw nothing but the pathway to escape. At one point they were directed to an opening by a bartender. Greg was looking for a wall to crouch behind. They left the venue through the opening that people had created by knocking down a fence. The opening was small but the crowd went through orderly and rapidly. They continued running toward Giles St. and as they approached an apartment building and ran up the steps, about nine people were entering one of the units. Those strangers invited the three in. Since no one knew what was happening, they pushed a heavy table against the door. Soon, Greg got on his cell phone and left messages for his children and then called a friend who works for North Las Vegas Police Department. Greg's notification was his friend's first alert even before his department's. Much later in the wee hours of the morning, that friend located Greg, Katrina, and Diane, took them to the airport, and from there the three took Uber transportation home. As Greg and Katrina process this tragedy, they have discovered so much good. They have bonded with new friends for life, they value old friendships more, and they have renewed their commitment to one another. They have deepened in their love for each other and for family. In the six weeks since the Route 91 Festival, they have attended two other concerts and flew back to Nashville for the commemoration concert for the 1 October event. The first concert was tough; the second easier. Greg, a music connoisseur, can only listen to Country and Western sounds since the concert. His attitude about and capacity for helping others has increased. He feels guilty because he did not do enough to encourage those new friends who decided to hunker down, to run away with him and his family. Subjects: Route 91 Festival, Mandalay Bay, church, Giles St., airport, guns, guilt, CCW - Concealed Carry Weapon Permit, beer, bartender, fence, hero, lights, giving attitude |
