Welcome to Special Collections and Archives.
We collect, preserve, and provide in-person and online access to unique and rare materials focused on Las Vegas, our region, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the gambling industry worldwide.
We are committed to providing exceptional experience for all of our researchers, including those that may need accommodations.
Please feel free to reach out prior to your visit with any questions or requests you may have. In order to protect and preserve the unique and rare materials held in UNLV's Special Collections and Archives, researchers will be asked to follow certain protocols during their visit.
These are typical requirements of researchers visiting any type of archival repository or special collections here in the U.S. or across the world.
For instance, no food, drink, or chewing gum is allowed in order to keep our rare materials from being damaged by spills or sticky fingers.
We do not require researchers to wear gloves unless they are handling photographic materials.
We do, however, ask that you wash your hands before your visit.
Upon entering, we ask all first time visitors to fill out a registration form and sign in at the front desk.
On subsequent visits to Special Collections and Archives, patrons are only required to sign in.
We keep these registration forms on file, and researchers will be asked to fill one out each year to confirm that all information is current.
For security reasons, researchers are required to place their backpack, purse, or laptop sleeve in a locker during their visit. You may take out a laptop, notebook, or whatever device you need in order to take notes or photos of documents.
Please make sure to only use pencil at the table in order to protect our materials from accidental marks with the pen, which could create permanent damage.
Pencils are available by request at the front desk if needed.
Unlike the rest of Lied Library, our material is housed in closed stacks, meaning it must be requested at the front desk by filling out a call slip and cannot be removed from our reading room.
Staff use the call slip to retrieve the material and will bring it out to your table.
This process typically only takes a few minutes.
However, if you need material that is housed in our LASR [Lied Automated Storage Retrieval] storage facility on the first floor, please give us 24-hour notice.
Items housed in LASR are noted as such, both in the Finding Aid and in the catalog record. When using books in our collection, we will provide you with a foam book rest and a snake weight to protect the spine.
Requested materials may be contained in multiple boxes, but we ask that you work on one box at a time.
Individual folders should be removed from the box and their location marked with the provided out card in order to maintain the original folder order.
Place the folder flat on the table, taking care to preserve the original order of the documents inside.
Once finished, return it to its original place in the box marked by the out card.
Conducting research from multiple boxes simultaneously is prohibited as it may lead to damaged or misfiled materials.
Three scanning devices are available in the reading room to aid you in making digital copies of material.
Please consult staff in order to ensure that you are using the machines correctly and not potentially damaging rare books and materials.
At the end of your visit, please notify the person at the reference desk if you would like to place the items on hold for further research, or if you are done.
Once you've retrieved your belongings from the locker, return the key to the attendant, and don't forget to sign out before you leave.
Thank you for visiting Special Collections and Archives.
We hope to see you again soon.
