Interlibrary Loan (Borrowing From Other Libraries)

Interlibrary Loan & DesktopExpress

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) assists UNLV students, staff, and faculty in accessing resources that are not available from the UNLV Libraries. ILL staff are able to obtain most books, articles, conference papers, government publications, and dissertations through our network of lending libraries.  Requests are placed via ILLiad.

DesktopExpress creates digital copies (PDFs) of UNLV-owned journal articles and book chapters for UNLV patrons, and makes the files available through users’ ILLiad accounts.

These services are available ONLY to UNLV students, faculty, and staff.

Placing ILL Requests

Books and microforms may be checked out from Lied Library’s Circulation Desk, or a branch library service desk (if you requested to pick your item(s) up there). Electronic copies of articles are yours to keep.

Renewals for books are granted at the discretion of the lending library, and should be requested four days before the item is due. Renewal requests may be placed online through your ILLiad account. To request a renewal, log on to your ILLiad account, locate the item, click on the transaction number, then click on "Renew Request." You will receive an email from the ILL office indicating that your renewal request was granted or denied. Items marked “NO RENEWALS” on the book band aren’t eligible.

  • Prior to requesting books, please check the Library Catalog to determine if the University Libraries own the item. If not, check the Link+ Catalog ; you can place requests for Link+ items online and they will be delivered in about four business days. If an item isn't available at UNLV or through Link+, then you may place an ILL request through ILLiad.
  • Before requesting journal articles, please search the Library Catalog and the UNLV Print and Online Journal Subscriptions to ensure that we don’t own the item in electronic format.

Options are available if you can't find an item or it's checked out. If you need assistance determining whether or not the UNLV Libraries own a particular title, please contact the Research and Information desk at (702) 895-2100 or use the online Ask a Librarian service.

Placing DesktopExpress Requests

Requests for materials can be placed 24 hours a day, seven days a week through ILLiad, our request management system. In order to register for and use ILLiad, you must be a currently enrolled UNLV student or currently employed UNLV faculty or staff member.  You must also have an active RebelCard that is clear of fees and an active UNLV email account (RebelMail for students; Lotus Notes for faculty/staff).

Article & book chapter requests are delivered electronically, usually within 72 hours.  Requests for microform scans may take up to 14 days.  There is no charge for using DesktopExpress, however, excessive requests or requests that may violate copyright laws will be cancelled at the discretion of library staff.
