This temporary student assistant position is a part-time position scheduled up to 20 hours per week, depending on budget funding. Scheduled shifts are dependent on the student assistant’s availability and the operational priorities and needs of the division and/or department.

Purpose of the position

The Dreamscape Learn Operations Student Assistant supports the daily execution of immersive learning experiences within the Dreamscape Learn space. This role facilitates structured VR sessions in both the Free Roam Pod and the Immersive VR Classroom, maintains equipment readiness, and delivers high-quality interactions and guest experiences for faculty, students, and visitors.

This position blends technical support, session facilitation, and professional hosting.

Duties & responsibilities

Session Facilitation

  • Lead and support scheduled VR sessions for classes and groups
  • Deliver safety briefings before Free Roam experiences
  • Fit participants with headsets and tracking equipment
  • Monitor live immersive sessions and assist users as needed
  • Manage rotations and ensure sessions run on schedule
  • Support instructional objectives during classroom-based VR modules

Technical Support

Free Roam Pod Operations

  • Prepare and calibrate equipment for up to 6 participants per session
  • Launch and monitor immersive Free Roam experiences
  • Reset and stage equipment between rotations
  • Ensure participant safety and comfort during active sessions

Immersive VR Classroom Management

  • Prepare and maintain 15 VR headsets
  • Launch and manage classroom experiences
  • Assist users with navigation and troubleshooting inside VR
  • Support faculty integration of immersive modules

Equipment Care and Sanitation

  • Clean and sanitize all headsets and controllers between uses
  • Manage charging cycles and storage procedures
  • Inspect equipment for wear, damage, or malfunction
  • Report technical issues promptly

Professional Hosting

Tours and Guest Experience

  • Deliver guided tours of the Dreamscape Learn space
  • Present the mission and capabilities of immersive learning at UNLV
  • Engage faculty, donors, advisory groups, and campus visitors
  • Represent Dreamscape Learn professionally and confidently
  • Maintain a welcoming, organized, and high-quality showcase environment

Working conditions

  • Occasionally lift up to 30 lbs for operationally servicing the free-roam pod

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small team setting
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • No prior technical experience required; on-the-job training will be provided
    • Experience with VR/XR technologies preferred but not required

Preferred:

  • Majoring in college of visual arts, architecture, engineering, entertainment engineering and design, or computer science.
  • Previous experience providing excellent customer service to a diverse customer base, preferably in an educational and/or retail setting.
  • Previous experience providing technical support and problem solving for computer hardware and software.
  • Previous experience using and troubleshooting VR headsets and other VR equipment.
  • Previous experience monitoring and supporting a schedule of events in a high-volume environment.
  • Evidence of effective communication with both technical and non-technical users.
