The Scholarly Communication and Data Services department at the University Libraries provides a range of research support services to UNLV faculty, staff, and students. These services include workshops, consultations, and asynchronous learning materials on topics such as electronic theses & dissertations, open access, author's rights, scholarly publishing, research impact, persistent identifiers, data management, data visualization, and GIS.
Our department also manages the institutional repository (IR) Digital Scholarship@UNLV. The IR is an open-access repository that captures, preserves, and shares the scholarly and creative output of the UNLV campus community. For more information, see our Institutional Repository guide.
The primary purpose of this position is to help ensure that as many materials in the IR meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 accessibility standards as reasonably possible. The student assistant will contribute to this goal by:
- Using Adobe Premiere Pro software to create captions and transcripts for legacy audiovisual materials in the IR.
- Using Adobe Acrobat Pro (or other software) to ensure legacy PDFs meet WCAG 2.0 upon user request.
- Using Adobe Acrobat Pro (or other software) to run accessibility checks on incoming submissions to the IR.
All necessary training on the software required to complete the tasks described
above will be provided.
- Learn new concepts and terms related to online accessibility by reviewing WCAG 2.0 guidelines and attending training sessions offered through the UNLV Office of Accessibility Resources.
- Effectively use software programs related to accessibility work, including Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and others.
- Follow written and verbal instructions.
- Upload and download digital files.
- Ensure incoming submissions meet accessibility standards.
- Work on remediating current audio and visual files hosted in our repository by adding captions using Adobe Premiere Pro.
- Run PDFs through Adobe Acrobat Pro Accessibility Checker.
- Remediate files in our institutional repository as requested.
- Remediate incoming submissions to Digital Scholarship@UNLV that do not meet accessibility standards.
- Occasionally assist with tasks performed by our other SCADS student assistants, such as supporting department events or contributing to smaller projects, as needed and directed.
