Day 2: Track Your Citations Using a Citation Database

Libraries Research Impact Challenge

Why should I keep track of citations of my work?

Tracking the citations of your research is a quick and simple way to learn about the impact of your work! You can use this information to find collaborators, report impact in grant proposals, job applications, or tenure packets, and more. There are also a number of metrics that exist to calculate your citation impact in your field.

In today’s challenge, you’ll learn more about how you can track the citations of your work using various citation databases here at UNLV - Scopus and Web of Science - as well as the free to use Google Scholar.

Complete today’s challenge!

To complete today’s challenge, follow the below steps:

  1. Track citations in Google Scholar
    1. Visit https://scholar.google.com/
    2. Click “My Profile” in the upper left corner (make sure you’re logged into your Google account)
    3. Click “View All” to check out what citations Google Scholar was able to locate
    4. Click the “Follow” button to receive a notification when Google Scholar finds a new citation of your scholarship
  2. Track citations in Scopus
    1. Visit the Research Impact subject database listing and select Scopus (an ACE login may be required)
    2. Select “Authors” and enter your first and last name, then click “Search”

    2. Select the “Researchers” tab and enter your first and last name, then click “Search”
    3. You will either be taken to a list of names, or directly to your Web of Science created profile. Select your name from the list if needed to go to your profile.
    4. Go to your profile settings to turn on citation notifications

Bonus challenge

Claim your Scopus or Web of Science researcher profile and take control!

Did you know? It's easy to claim your profile on either platform, and it helps you as an author and research to have more control over what's displayed. This includes connecting your ORCID iD to your other profiles, disputing author claims that are not yours, and much more.
