What's New in Special Collections: Robert Scott Hooper Photographs

Every month, Special Collections and Archives showcases some of our newly processed collections. Here are some of the highlights for April.

  • The Robert Scott Hooper Photographs (approximately 1950-2018) consist of photographic negatives, positives, slides, prints, Polaroids, business records, correspondence, drawings, audiovisual material, and ephemera. The collection was created by prolific photographer Robert Scott Hooper and his longtime business partner and wife, Theresa Holmes. The couple's life and business was based in Las Vegas, Nevada. Hooper's work focused on the female form, encompassing many areas of interest including sexual entertainment, modeling, pornography, and Las Vegas entertainment. Hooper was a contributing photographer with Playboy and Vegas Visitor magazines. Hooper also photographed many celebrities, Las Vegas production shows, notable events like hotel implosions, and the development of the Las Vegas Strip, including early time-lapse work of the Luxor Hotel and Casino and The Venetian.

  • The Olind Jenni Scrapbook on Las Vegas Casinos (1974-1986) is a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings, advertisements and promotions, and photographs relating to hotels and casinos owned by Jenni, including the King 8 Hotel and Casino, Ambassador Casino, and the Opera House Casino. The materials in the scrapbook document events, personnel, and publicity and promotions used to draw customers to the properties.

  • The Sal Angelica Scrapbooks (1959-2021) are comprised of 23 scrapbooks created by dancer Sal Angelica that document his career performing in a variety of shows in Las Vegas, Nevada, New York, and California, as well as touring performances throughout the United States and internationally. The scrapbooks are labeled and contain photographs, newspaper clippings, show programs, contracts, and correspondence such as telegrams of congratulations, greeting cards, and printed emails. The photographs include publicity photos, backstage and personal snapshots, and action shots of performances. Shows documented in the scrapbooks include Latin Quarter, Casino de Paris, Lido de Paris, Hallelujah Hollywood, Flesh, Juliet Prowse, West Side Story, and others. Angelica regularly attended cast reunions, so there are modern photos of him with other performers at reunions held for Casino de Paris, Folies Bergere, Lido de Paris, and Latin Quarter, along with emails providing detailed information about the reunions. The collection also includes signed photographs, obituaries, and other documents relating to dancers and celebrities with whom Angelica performed.
