With an amazing variety of historical material ranging from maps and photographs to costume designs and rare books and much more, UNLV Libraries Special Collections is never short of material to enlighten and entertain our researchers about Las Vegas,  southern Nevada, gaming, and UNLV history.  For many years we have made our materials more accessible to the public by digitizing thousands of items and making them available in our digital collections for researchers all over the world.

More recently, in our continuing mission to provide wide access to our collections, we have utilized social media such as FacebookTwitter, and Instagram as additional outlets to showcase our unique materials for people that might not be regular visitors to academic libraries and archives. Our Facebook page, active since 2009, recently reached a milestone of 1000 likes and its popularity continues to grow weekly especially among local and former Las Vegas residents who enjoy our historic photographs for their nostalgia factor. We also use our Facebook account to promote events, exhibits, staff and collecting initiatives in our Division.

Our Twitter account highlights historic photos and happenings in UNLV Libraries Special Collections and also retweets outside posts of interest to archivists, librarians, and Las Vegas and Nevada history aficionados.

Our Instagram account allows us to not only showcase an eclectic variety of material from our collections, but to participate in fun library and archive social media campaigns such as #hatsinthelibrary, #marbledmonday, #librariesofinstragram, and #foreedgefriday. Instagram has also connected us to rare book libraries and bibliophiles from around the United States and the world.  We count among our followers libraries from Spain, the UK (including Scotland, England, and Wales), Serbia, Poland, Canada, Germany, Norway, and Ukraine.

One of the exciting things about social media is getting a sense of how our users view our collections - it can be great feedback!  Sometimes we even answer simple reference queries on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Whatever the social networking service, we are happy to use it as a means to increase public awareness of our amazing historical documentation of Las Vegas, southern Nevada, gaming, and UNLV. We hope we've inspired you to like or follow us very soon!
