Gaming Research Colloquium Talk on March 25

By Deborah Millett on March 24, 2010 4:40 PM | Permalink
Please join us on Thursday, March 25, at 12:15 p.m., as March Gaming Research Fellow Pascale Nedelec delivers a Gaming Research Colloquium talk entitled "Urban Dynamics in the Las Vegas Valley: Casinos and Sprawl."

The event is free and open to the public.  Those interested in the history, geography, and the sociology of Las Vegas and casinos are encouraged to attend.

The talk is being held in UNLV Special Collections' Reading Room, on the third floor of Lied Library.

Nedelec, a doctoral candidate at the University of Lyon 2 in Lyon, France, is studying the role of neighborhood casinos in the development of Las Vegas.  While the casino industry has played an obvious role in the development of Las Vegas, no systematic study has evaluated the exact nature of urban growth and the rise of neighborhood casinos. This presentation examines whether the neighborhood casinos are a driving force for urban sprawl, or if they are a local outgrowth of residential developments and master-planned communities.
